Team Biden’s redemption tour has begun but faces one major obstacle

How long does it take to forgive somebody, if they won’t say sorry?

That’s the question facing Democrats when it comes to Joe Biden’s top aides, who are finally seeking a return to frontline politics after his disastrous Presidential campaign which handed Donald Trump a second term in the White House.

Biden’s team have been writing op-ed articles, appearing on television and penning guest essays attacking Trump’s agenda.

The former President gave a speech last week tearing into Trump for cutting Social Security.

His Vice-President Kamala Harris, who took over the Democratic candidacy after Biden dropped out, made her big comeback speech on Wednesday night, in which she accused the Trump administration of “wholesale abandonment of America’s highest ideals.”

All this amounts to an attempt to return to the fold for a group of people who are desperate to avoid what one US political website called “political Siberia”.

The problem for Biden’s team is that there have been mixed – to say the least – messages from them on what they did wrong and no apology from the former President.

Most voters believe that it was unforgivable to hide the fact that Biden, 82, the oldest President in history, was in mental and physical decline that meant he could not serve a second term.

Biden’s ego and the insularity of his team meant that they chose to obfuscate rather than tell the truth to the American people.

You would think this would warrant an apology from the people responsible.

    Not so fast.

Some of Biden’s aides think it was a mistake to drop out of the race, the Washington Post has reported, even though the polls were crushing him.

The former President felt that he could have beaten Trump had he not quit the race with a few months to go, reports have claimed.

Instead of proper reckoning, books about Biden have claimed that his former chief of staff Ron Klain thought Biden was “fatigued, befuddled and disengaged” prior to his disastrous presidential debate last June.

Why didn’t he say something at the time, you might be wondering.

The lack of accountability hasn’t stopped people like Rob Flaherty, Biden and Harris’ deputy campaign manager, lecturing his own party in the New York Times  that they need to appeal to centrist voters.

Brian Deese, who served as director of the National Economic Council during the first two years of the Biden administration, lambasted the effect of Trump’s tariffs in his own piece for the Times.

There have also been TV appearances from former Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and former national security adviser Jake Sullivan, who told ABC that he didn’t want to speak up at the time for fear of being a “backseat driver”.

Now he sees it differently and admitted: “When you see the car start careening towards the cliff, you got to say something”.

In his first post-presidency speech, Biden said that the damage caused by Trump’s first 100 days was “breathtaking.”

Harris was even more direct, saying in her first major address since the election that Trump is causing “absolute chaos”.

Biden’s aides are hardly the first to hide a president’s mental or physical decline.

John F Kennedy’s White House hushed up his chronic back problems and his Addison’s disease, which led to fatigue and digestive problems – as well as his severe allergies and urinary tract infections.

Joe Biden should not be shocked at what is happening in the US – much of it is his fault

The full extent of Ronald Reagan’s Alzheimer’s was only reported on after he left office.

But Biden’s challenges became undeniable after the first Presidential debate where he slurred his speech and struggled to string a sentence together.

It was shocking to see a sitting President struggling so badly and the charade that he was in good health collapsed instantly.

In hindsight it looks comically naive to run a Presidential campaign hoping that your candidate will only have good days when in private he has just as many bad ones.

And it isn’t just Biden’s aides who are having to do a hard pivot when it comes to his decline.

Jake Tapper, a CNN anchor and one of the most prominent journalists in America, is writing a book about Biden called Original Sin which he claims will tell the inside story of the former president’s 2024 campaign.

But in 2020 Tapper defended Biden in a combative interview with Lara Trump, Trump’s daughter-in-law.

“I think you have absolutely no standing to diagnose somebody’s cognitive decline”, Tapper said.

Now Tapper is promising to reveal the truth that he arguably should have reported on at the time.

The line being peddled by Biden’s aides is that the lessons they learned from their loss should be shared with other people.

You have probably heard this kind of talk before from bankers, police and the real estate industry and it’s perverse, illogical and a transparent attempt to stay in power.

Forgiveness will eventually come from Democrats towards Biden’s team but one question will linger with them forever: “Why didn’t they say something?”
