UC health, tech workers on strike Thursday

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- University of California employees are set to go on strike Thursday in protest of a hiring freeze. Organizers said 20,000 UC workers are expected to take part in the strike across the state.

The union representing the University of California said strikes will be happening at every UC campus and health center, including UC Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) union and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) claim the hiring freeze is causing a staffing crisis, impacting patients, research and students.

“People can't afford to live where these jobs are,” Todd Stenhouse with AFSCME Local 3299 said. “We've seen a third of the 40,000 people we represent leave their jobs voluntarily in the last three years. Not because they don't love them, not because they don't want them, because they can't afford to live anywhere near where they work.”

The two unions represent 96,000 employees in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The UC Office of the President said this is the fourth strike in six months. The office is set to meet with UPTE on May 8 to continue negotiations.

The UC said it made a final offer to AFSCME Wednesday night, meeting the union’s demands of $25 per hour and a 5 percent raise.

UCSF said regular operations will continue Thursday. The impact on patients will be limited.

Picketing on Thursday is expected to start at 8 a.m. and run until 2 p.m.
