The recent passing of Jeff Sperbeck, John Elway's longtime business partner and former agent, has sent ripples of shock and sorrow through the sports community. At the age of 62, Sperbeck succumbed to injuries sustained in a tragic golf cart accident on April 30, 2025, in La Quinta, California . The incident occurred while Elway was driving the cart, leading to an investigation by the Riverside County Sheriff's Office. Initial reports indicate no signs of reckless behavior on Elway's part .
The Riverside County (California) coroner confirmed Sperbeck's death in a news release from the sheriff's office. Sperbeck was injured Saturday night in La Quinta, California, and was declared dead early Wednesday at a Palm Springs hospital.
"I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck," Elway said in a statement Wednesday. "There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.
"My heart and deepest sympathies go out to Jeff's wife, Cori; his children Carly, Sam and Jackson; and everyone who knew and loved him. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others."
Paramedics took Sperbeck to the Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, which is where he was pronounced dead early Wednesday morning.
Sperbeck began managing Elway’s business interests during Elway’s playing career with the Denver Broncos in the 1990s. The two opened 7Cellars Winery together in 2013.
The Sheriff's Office confirmed to News Channel 3 that they were made aware of the accident on Monday and have launched an investigation.
Sperbeck has represented over 100 NFL players throughout his 30-year career as a football agent and business advisor. He became John Elway's manager in 1990.
Sperbeck's influence extended far beyond his role as an agent; he represented over 100 NFL players and maintained lasting relationships with many clients even after their professional careers ended. His enduring partnership with Elway spanned more than three decades and encompassed numerous business ventures that contributed significantly to both their legacies . In a heartfelt statement following Sperbeck’s death, Elway expressed his devastation and condolences to Sperbeck’s family, highlighting the deep personal loss felt alongside the professional one.
