Andrew Duarte was working with the West York Borough Police Department at the time of his death and had responded to the scene through a mutual aid request. Duarte worked with the Denver Police Department from May 2017 to May 2022.

The gunman, later identified as Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, 49, took hostages at UPMC Memorial Hospital before he was killed by police in a shootout that also left Duarte dead.

Barker said Wednesday that Archangel-Ortiz had taken a healthcare worker hostage as a human shield and was in the hospital's ICU area. An officer reportedly shot at Archangel-Ortiz and hit him from behind, but a pellet from the shotgun ricocheted and hit an officer, and also hit Duarte.

Barker said Duarte was shot twice: Once on his side where his tactical vest didn't cover him, and also in his left arm. Barker said that Archangel-Ortiz was shot 15 to 20 times during the incident, leading to his death.
