Oklahoma lands wide receiver target out of transfer portal

Oklahoma finally addressed its need at receiver on Wednesday.

According to multiple reports, the Sooners have signed former McNeese State transfer wideout Jer’Michael Carter. The 6-foot-4 Carter visited campus last weekend. CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz had the news first on Wednesday. Carter confirmed the move hours later on his personal social media page.

According to SoonerScoop’s George Stoia, Carter chose the Sooners over Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Utah, and Baylor.

Oklahoma has now added 5 transfer wideouts to the roster since the 2024 season ended. Carter joins Javonnie Gibson (UAPB), Isaiah Staegna (Arkansas), Josiah Martin (Cal), and Keontez Lewis (SIU). A spring injury to Gibson pushed receiver right back to the top of the priority list for coach Brent Venables in the spring window.

Carter joins the program with 2 seasons of eligibility remaining. Last fall, he caught 37 passes for 537 yards and 3 scores. Though the numbers don’t jump off the page, he made the most of his opportunities within an offense that wasn’t the friendliest to receivers. The Cowboys had nearly a 60-40 run/pass split last season and no other receiver ended the year with more than 325 yards through the air. Carter became the first McNeese player since 2019 to have more than 525 receiving yards in a single season.

He’ll give Oklahoma a big-bodied receiver on the outside for new quarterback John Mateer to target. With a new quarterback, a new offensive coordinator, and a radically overhauled receiver room, the Sooners are hopeful for a more effective passing attack in 2025. OU ranked 131st out of 134 FBS teams in EPA per dropback last season, per Game on Paper.
