CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Tuesday marks six years since the mass shooting at UNC Charlotte that changed the campus community forever. On April 30, 2019, a former student opened fire in a classroom, killing two students and injuring four others.
Those who died -- 19-year-old Ellis Parlier and 21-year-old Riley Howell -- are being remembered Wednesday across campus and beyond.

Howell is remembered for his heroic actions that day. Investigators and eyewitnesses say he tackled the shooter, likely saving many others from harm.
Law enforcement later recognized his bravery and was even referenced by officials with the Star Wars franchise, a favorite of Howell’s, as part of a tribute.

(File Photo)The shooter, a former student, pleaded guilty to the attack and is now serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Following the shooting, the university took major steps to improve campus safety. That includes a larger campus police presence and an upgraded emergency alert system that keeps students and staff informed during crisis situations.
