On Tuesday, April 29, fans of the network were introduced to two married couples: Alysia and Tyler, and Sean and Taya. However, Alysia is also dating Sean, and Taya is dating Tyler. Sean and Tyler do not have a romantic relationship, and neither do Alysia and Taya.

What is a closed quad in TLC's Polyfamily?

So, what is a closed quad, anyway?
"Taya's my wife, and Alysia's my girlfriend," Sean explained in a trailer for Polyfamily.
To that, Tyler added, "And vice-versa: Alysia's my wife, and Taya's my girlfriend."
Sean continued, "We are a closed, polyamorous quad. A closed quad is four people, us. We're only dating within ourselves and married within ourselves. We don't have any outside partners."
"Like everybody else, right?" Tyler quipped.
"We never set out to live our lives like this," Alysia admitted. "But we realized we could love more than one person and make our own rules as to what we want our family to look like.

Tyler and Alysia had two children (Dylan and Rayna) before they met Sean and Taya. Since they became a closed quad, Alysia gave birth to another child, Barrett, and Taya gave birth to her first child, Carver. At the start of the show, Taya is pregnant with her second child, a son they named Quinton.
The kicker: No one knows who the biological fathers are of the youngest three kids—and they all want to keep it that way.
While explaining the sleeping arrangement, Taya pointed out, "Since the guys switch rooms every other night, we don't know who the fathers of the younger boys are."
"Of course, we wonder sometimes," Tyler confessed. "But finding out could cause a lot of hurt."
Is Taya dating someone else in Polyfamily?
In the trailer for Polyfamily, TLC teased that the closed quad might eventually open.
"I have something to share," Taya told the other three. "I feel like I have a connection with someone else."
"What does that mean?" Tyler asked.
In a confessional, Tyler added, "The quad that we have now is the most important thing to me. And I don't want to screw that up by not thinking things through."
To Taya, he pointed out, "It's complicated to bring someone else in. We're not closed anymore at that point. We're just not."
Alysia admitted, "I don't know where we go from here."
As of writing, it's unclear whether another person joined the closed quad. It looks like fans will have to tune in to find out!
TLC's Polyfamily premieres on Tuesday, April 20 at 10 p.m. ET on TLC and streaming the next day on Max.
