Brazil star’s Pep Guardiola admission spells trouble for Carlo Ancelotti ahead of next manager job

Carlo Ancelotti could be in for a rude awakening upon taking the Brazil job.

The Italian is set to swap club football’s most prestigious role for international football’s equivalent.

Ancelotti’s second spell as Real Madrid boss will come to a close at the end of the season after a difficult season for Los Blancos.

It was compounded by their Champions League exit to Arsenal, which preceded Saturday’s Copa del Rey defeat at the hands of bitter rivals Barcelona – their third defeat to the Catalans this season.

With Madrid trailing Hansi Flick’s side in the race for LaLiga glory, victory against Barca in El Clasico next month still won’t be enough to overthrow a four-point advantage.

Whilst disgruntlement continues to shroud the Bernabeu, the 65-year-old can be proud of his accomplishments which have seen him lead the club to two LaLiga titles and two Champions League triumphs since returning in 2021.

And his overall work has not gone unnoticed amongst the doom and gloom.

Brazil are desperate to have the legendary boss in the dugout for June’s World Cup qualifying double header against Ecuador and Paraguay and they appear to be inching closer to their wish.

However, it might not be the welcome he expects once he arrives in sun-drenched Rio de Janeiro if former Brazil star Dani Alves’ words are to be believed.

The ex-Barcelona full-back once revealed that Pep Guardiola wanted to take charge of the Seleção at the 2014 World Cup that they hosted.

Alves, who played under the Spaniard during their time together at the Nou Camp, was part of the Brazil team that were humiliated 7-1 by Germany in the semi-final in 2014.

Prior to the tournament, Brazil appointed former Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari as coach.

At the time, Guardiola was enjoying a one-year hiatus from football with Alves revealing that the Spaniard was willing to take over as boss.

However, Brazil officials were afraid of hiring a foreign coach.

“Pep said he wanted to make Brazil a World Cup champion and had an entire strategy to make us a world champion,” Alves told ESPN Brasil in 2015.

“They didn’t want it, because they said that they didn’t know if Brazil would accept a foreign coach.”

“Pep is the best coach in the world, the greatest sports manager I’ve ever seen. He revolutionised football, revolutionised a team and we had the chance to have him with us.

“If you let an opportunity like this go by, then you are not really thinking about the national team.”

Guardiola eventually took charge of Bayern Munich, leading the Bundesliga giants to three consecutive league titles before moving to Manchester City and winning a total of 18 trophies.

Brazil’s recent struggles in World Cup qualifying saw Dorival Junior relieved of his duties following a 4-1 defeat against arch-rivals Argentina in March.

The five-time world champions have had to watch their neighbours dominate world football in recent years beginning with their Copa America final win over Brazil in the Maracana in 2021.

World Cup glory followed in 2022 before La Albiceleste eased to a second consecutive Copa America title last summer.

Add to that, that no Brazilian has won the Ballon d’Or since Kaka lifted the trophy in 2007 – a sign of systematic failure for a country that expects so much from its stars.

Meanwhile, Brazil have shown their struggles both in qualifying and at major tournaments with the long-term absence of Neymar laying bare their shortcomings.

Vincius Jr has been unable to adequately fill the void left by the world’s most expensive player and Brazil chiefs will hope Ancelotti’s nurturing of the star at Real Madrid will bring the best out of him and compatriot Rodrygo.

Brazil sit fourth in CONMEBOL qualifying with the top six teams booking their place at next summer’s showpiece in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

And Ancelotti will need to find a way to quickly lift a Brazil squad and their adoring but pessimistic fans who have lost hope in their current crop of stars.
