Hometown Hero: Fowota Mortoo

This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Fowota Mortoo.

Mortoo is a history student at UNC who has dedicated herself to reviving parts of our history that have gone untold and unremembered. She’s done that with an innovative visual project honoring Black families that helped construct the UNC buildings and pathways that we know and love today. It’s a 12-foot paper map with archival photos and overlaid with a hand drawn map and the names of the specific families that built that building and pathway.

You can see the map for yourself at the Seymour Center. You can get more information at the Jackson Center’s website here.
