Arkansas might have a shot to recoup a buyout from some of its NIL deals, but, according to Paul Finebaum, it’s a dangerous game that the Razorbacks might be entering into.
The most prominent case involves quarterback Madden Iamaleava, the younger brother of Nico Iamaleava. Once Nico left Tennessee for UCLA, Madden was not far behind, entering the portal and leaving Arkansas to team up with his brother out west.
Since then, it has been reported that the Razorbacks are looking to recoup $200,000 in buyout figures from players who violated NIL agreements. Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek has released a statement in support of those endeavors by the program.
However, during his Monday morning appearance for “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning,” Finebaum said that Arkansas’s attempts could earn the program a “very bad reputation,” even if the Razorbacks have a case:
“I know a lot of people say (Arkansas) is doing the right thing. We all understand that, but I think the problem for universities when you try to go to court, when you start suing players you recruited and offered, you run a big risk of getting a very bad reputation,” Finebaum conceded.

At the end of the day, Finebaum urged Arkansas to “let it go” and called it a “bad look” for the program to go down this road:
“I would let it go. Arkansas can live without the money. You just make it too draconian,” said Finebaum. “I know he had an agreement and I know he made money and that’s fair, but ultimately, this goes on every day, everywhere and do you want to be the school that young players are afraid of going (to) in case a mistake is made? I think it’s a bad look for Arkansas, and they have enough problems in football right now without bringing in a bunch of guns like Tom Mars to make it worse.”
We’ll see how things shake out for Arkansas and whether or not the current pursuit of NIL buyout funds has an impact on future recruiting.
