Liverpool win title with swagger and these three key reasons are the how they blew Premier League out of the water

Liverpool partied at home and partied in style, taking apart Tottenham Hotspur to seal the title.

But the reason why they are champions is because of their away form.

Liverpool went into grounds all over the Premier League and plundered points.

They did it with a swagger, winning 3-0 at Old Trafford, 6-3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and 5-0 at the London Stadium.

They did it with a show of resilience, levelling late through Mo Salah at the Emirates Stadium, through Diogo Jota’s equaliser at the City Ground and Darwin Nunez’s stoppage-time double at the Gtech.

Liverpool did it through the brilliance of Salah with his goal and assist in victory at the Etihad Stadium.

They won at Molineux and Selhurst Park. Craven Cottage was the only venue of the 17 they have so far visited where they did not collect any points.

In every sense, Liverpool are far and away the best side in the land.

So how did they become champions? Good players responding to good managing. Rival fans will conjure up nonsensical conspiracy theories about officiating.

Liverpool can counter that they had plenty of decisions go against them, and are still aggrieved about James Tarkowski’s late equaliser at Goodison Park.

Rival fans will claim that Liverpool were fortunate with injuries, ignoring that Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson, Conor Bradley, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Harvey Elliott, amongst others, have all been out for significant spells.

Yet the new champions have undeniably benefited from the influence and methods of Ruben Peeters, first-team lead physical performance coach.

Stars like Virgil van Dijk and Salah will rightly get the headlines, but there are lesser-known figures at the club who deserve just as much creditGetty

The 32-year-old Belgian was the first appointment announced of Arne Slot’s backroom staff and you can see why.

A skilled sports scientist, Peeters knows how hard to push players, and when to ease their training workload.

Other clubs, particularly those struggling with injuries, will look at Peeters’ work and consider how they can replicate it. Or who they can employ to replicate it.

As managers often say when discussing a player’s strength – ‘the best ability is availability’.

Those left in Liverpool’s slipstream have to acknowledge the champions’ success on the road. Tactics, temperament and talent underpin that.

Slot’s appointment has been key. Liverpool’s title shows what can be done with good management.

Liverpool haven’t spent lavishly to move from third last season to first; just the £10million on Federico Chiesa.

Slot’s coaching has worked wonders. The defence is tighter with the obvious tweak being the full-backs more defensive, less buccaneering, than under Jurgen Klopp. Alexander-Arnold still delivered the key moment against Leicester last weekend.

The midfield has more control, and it will be a travesty if Ryan Gravenberch doesn’t get in the Premier League team of the season.

Gravenberch’s double-pivot axis with Alexis Mac Allister has been outstanding all season. Dominik Szoboszlai switched effectively between 8 and 10, leading the press. The Hungarian’s hunger for turning over the ball high up the field remains a powerful echo of the Klopp era.

Liverpool love control in midfield, building moves, but they vary their attacks. They are devastating on the counter, especially when the ball is shifted right to and through Salah.

His goal against Spurs took him outright fifth in the Premier League’s all-time goalscoring list, moving ahead of Sergio Aguero, and on to 185 goals. He now has 28 goals and 18 assists in 34 league games this season.

For his goalscoring, creating and the excitement in his play, Salah deserves to be named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.

It would be bizarre if the most influential, productive player in England’s elite division – and wonderful role model – did not receive the honour. I voted for Salah. One of the easiest decisions in years.

Slot should also be saluted as Manager of the Year. He has won the title in his first season, only the fifth manager to do that in Premier League history.

None of Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Manuel Pellegrini or Antonio Conte have done it with such a points lead (so far) or such little investment (that £10m on Chiesa).

They’ve not staggered over the line. Liverpool won six of their last seven Premier League games.

They are 15 points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who are still good enough to have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.

It’s not Liverpool’s fault that City failed to refresh the squad last summer. It’s not been a vintage season but that’s partly because Liverpool have dominated.

Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Gravenberch and Salah all have strong claims to be in the Premier League team of the season.

Liverpool are the team of the season for all reasons, not least their form on the road.
