Liverpool win the Premier League after incredible turnaround against Tottenham

Liverpool have been crowned Premier League champions for a second time after fighting back to thrash Tottenham on Sunday.

A dream debut season for Arne Slot has seen the Dutchman lead Liverpool to a 20th top-flight title, moving them level with Manchester United’s all-time record.

And they have done so not only with four games to spare, but this time in front of their fans. Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy inside an empty Anfield in 2020 due to Covid, but this time supporters bore witness to their side getting over the line.

Anfield was a sea of colour amid emotional scenes that felt five, or some might say 35, years in the waiting, and though Spurs threatened to spoil the party – Dominic Solanke heading the visitors in front – Liverpool responded in the first half through Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo.

Fittingly, Mohamed Salah then got on the scoresheet – ending by his standards a barren six-game run without a goal – and after a selfie with the Kop that could fetch a few quid, Destiny Udogie’s own goal made it five.

The celebrations were already underway, and while the trophy presentation won’t be until the final day at home to Crystal Palace on 25 May, there were jubilant scenes when the full-time whistle signalled Liverpool’s now insurmountable 15-point lead over Arsenal, who are primed to finish second for a third consecutive season.

Liverpool’s triumph also marks the end of Manchester City’s stranglehold on the title after a record four straight wins – Pep Guardiola’s side left fighting to finish inside the Champions League places.

Some quarters have therefore pointed at City’s significant drop-off, as well as Arsenal’s struggle with injuries, as reasons why Liverpool have reclaimed the title.

However, that would do a disservice to what has been a remarkable first campaign post-Jurgen Klopp, so far reading 25 wins, seven draws and just two defeats.

There was disappointment in the Champions League and domestic cups, but Liverpool could yet reach 94 points in the league, a tally that exceeds any total United achieved under Sir Alex Ferguson, while even 90 points would have been enough to win nine of the previous 15 campaigns.

The Reds aren’t there quite yet, but they have been the best in class this season, with Salah in particular a cut above.

The Egyptian – who signed a contract extension earlier this month – is a shoo-in for the individual Premier League awards, having scored 28 goals and assisted a further 18.

He therefore tops both charts, while the combined tally of 46 is already the most goal involvements from one player in a 38-match Premier League season. Alan Shearer (1994-95) and Andrew Cole (1993-94) share the record on 47, when it was 42 games, meaning Salah still has time to overtake them.

Slot, meanwhile, becomes the sixth manager to win the Premier League in his debut season at a club, and the first since Antonio Conte (Chelsea) in 2016-17.

Five moments that won Liverpool the title

    By Max O’Shea

Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool, 1 September 2024 – Arne Slot’s first competitive derby as Liverpool boss. Two games into the season, they were already showing promising signs. Coming away from Old Trafford with three points as a new manager is one thing but winning 3-0 is another. A terrific performance across the board from a Liverpool perspective demonstrating intelligence, passion and determination.

Rodri’s injury, 22 September 2024 – In a parallel world there’s a title race where Rodri stayed injury-free, but after rupturing his ACL in September Manchester City’s defence crumbled and has left them fighting for a top-five place.

Arsenal 2-2 Liverpool, 27 October 2024 – Their closest rivals for this season’s title were left stunned as both times Arsenal took the lead, they were met by a Liverpool equaliser. A performance which displayed the grit and tactical intelligence to stick to Slot’s plan.

Super subs, December and January – Perhaps the greatest threat to Liverpool’s 26-game unbeaten run in the league being snapped was the January “blip”, but Diogo Jota – who had already rescued a point against Fulham in December – came off the bench to salvage a point against Nottingham Forest before Darwin Nunez struck twice in injury time to beat Brentford the following game.

Man City 0-2 Liverpool, 23 February 2025 – After draws with Everton and Aston Villa, and an unconvincing win over Wolves, Liverpool had one hand on the trophy after beating the defending champions in their own back yard, and in convincing fashion, too.
