‘Exhibition’ – Former World Champion in awe of ‘Ronaldinho of snooker’ after jaw-dropping session

Luca Brecel was hailed by six-time world champion Steve Davis after his blistering performance at the Crucible.

The Belgian Bullet won seven frames in a row to take command of his second round clash with Ding Junhui.

Saturday evening’s opening session had begun with Ding completing a 141 break to move into the lead.

However, Brecel responded by winning the next seven to end the day leading 7-1.

His seven-frame streak included a pair of centuries with breaks of 121 and 100.

Meanwhile, the Chinese cueist scored just 15 more points during the session.

Davis was left in awe of Brecel’s display as he barely missed a pot after dropping the opening frame.

Speaking on commentary, the former world champion exclaimed: “We’ve witnessed the most amazing exhibition of snooker, in one session, I think I’ve ever seen at the Crucible.”

Brecel has previously compared his playing style to Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldinho.

The 30-year-old says he is not bothered about winning tournaments as ‘it’s all about just entertaining and fun’.

His victory over Ryan Day in the first round had been his first win at the Crucible since beating Mark Selby in the final two years ago.

That victory also remains the last ranking final Brecel has appeared in after a disappointing drop in form.

His title defence 12 months ago had been ended by 31st seed David Gilbert, who produced a surprise run to the semi-finals.

The 2023 world champion immediately returned to Belgium following his opening round victory.

Brecel then flew back to Sheffield via private jet on Saturday, landing just 25 minutes before the evening session.

He will be back on the table on Sunday afternoon to resume his clash with Ding at 2.30pm.

The seventh seed needs just six more frames to win their best of 25 encounter.

Either Shaun Murphy or Judd Trump await the winner in the quarter-finals later this week.

The last eight encounter is scheduled to be played across Tuesday and Wednesday’s sessions.

World number one Trump currently leads the 2005 champion 5-3 following the opening eight frames.
