Suryakumar Yadav wasn’t at his best before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. In between the two IPL seasons, he averaged just 21.50 across all T20 matches he played. For someone whose career average is 34.77, that’s pretty poor. His strike rate during this period was 144.94. This too is a 30% drop from his 152.72 career record.

Suryakumar Yadav’s return to form in IPL 2025

Suryakumar was great in the T20 World Cup 2024, but in the four subsequent series against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa and England, the India cricket team T20I captain was nowhere near his best. Although the Men in Blue continued to win, his performance was an issue.

His bad patch of form affected him in the early stages of the IPL 2025 as well. His 67-run knock against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 4 was perhaps one of his worst innings. He played a major role in Mumbai Indians (MI) losing. But as they say, form is temporary but class is permanent.

Suryakumar has returned to his very best. Facing LSG again. He redeemed himself for the sluggish knock from a couple of weeks back. He scored his third fifty of the IPL 2025 season and snatched the Orange Cap away from Sai Sudharsan. His play against spin was marvellous, and his shots behind the wickets against pacers just told you that SKY is back.

“It’s the first time I am wearing this (orange) cap after a long time; it feels really special. I was really happy when we lost the toss because it is really hot out there, but scoring 200-plus is really good from a batting point of view,” SKY said after his knock.

SKY helps Mumbai Indians score 215

MI was in a good position already. When SKY reached the middle, they were 88/2 in 8.4 overs. Ryan Rickelton had given the 5-time champions what they wanted. From there, Suryakumar scored a 25-ball fifty and ensured they were on course to post more than 200 runs on the boards.

Will Jacks, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya all departed, but Suryakumar kept on smashing the LSG bowlers. When he departed in the 18th over, MI had scored 180 runs, and 15 balls were left. From there, Naman Dhir and Corbin Bosch provided the final flourish as MI ended with a 215-run total.
