Letter to the Editor: Gratitude for the helpers

Thanks to those doing good amid harms

So much destruction is occurring in the United States, and it terrifies those of us who realize how the negative impacts of the current presidency are bringing deep-seated stress and depression to many individuals. It is hard to know what to do, although many of us protest, write or call our senators and representatives, and make our voices heard.

I thank all people who do whatever they can: nonprofits that provide basic essentials to those in need; attorneys who help those who can’t afford one; schools that defy illegal executive orders; everyone fired by DOGE yet stand up for their rights; immigrants traumatized while being exemplary citizens; seniors praying they will receive their Social Security checks; volunteers who help in any capacity; librarians, who protect books from being banned; police who protect us while also having compassion; mental health professionals, who listen to their patients’ anxieties; people who smile at one another in the grocery store; students who care about climate change and inequality because they want to help their world; and veterans who put their lives on the line yet have promised benefits revoked.

I thank: preschool teachers in Colorado schools and Head Start, who teach how to be kind to one another; elementary-school teachers who work hard to educate young children and often must provide their own teaching materials; middle-school teachers who deal with their students’ early teenage years — a most challenging job; high-school teachers, who prepare students for college, trade schools, or other ways to work in our challenging society; and community-college and university teachers and professors, who are constantly berated by the current administration for teaching students how to think for themselves.

Many others deserve thanks. I appreciate everyone who works toward making our world a better place.

    Dianne Nelson, Greeley
