Quinn Ewers was the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2021 signing class, according to the industry-generated 247 Composite.
On Saturday, the former Texas passer was selected with the 231st overall pick in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. With his selection, he joined only a handful of former No. 1 overall recruits to be taken beyond the opening 2 days of the draft.
Since 2010, just 4 of the 13 draft-eligible players who were the top-ranked recruit in their class were selected outside the first round. Dorial Green-Beckham was a second-round pick in 2015 after playing for Mizzou and Oklahoma. Ronald Powell was a fifth-round pick in 2014 after a 5-year career at Florida.
Trenton Thompson, a former Georgia defensive lineman, is the only former No. 1 recruit since 2010 to go undrafted.
Ewers was able to avoid that fate. Still, very few would have expected Ewers to be the 231st overall pick in the draft when he stepped into college years ago.
As a recruit, Ewers had a rare and historic 1.0000 rating in the Composite. The scout for 247Sports who evaluated him wrote that Ewers would be an “impact high-major starter” with the potential to be “taken high” in the draft. He was given a first-round projection and compared to Philip Rivers.
Ewers was certainly an impact starter at the high-major level. He led Texas to a Big 12 championship in 2023 and led the Longhorns to an SEC Championship appearance in 2024. The program made consecutive appearances in the College Football Playoff with Ewers leading the way, and he went 27-9 as a starter for the school.
Yet, Ewers was the 13th quarterback selected in what was billed as a weak quarterback class. Dillon Gabriel, Kyle McCord, Will Howard, Riley Leonard, Graham Mertz, and Kurtis Rourke were all picked before him. An FCS quarterback was picked before him.
Ewers should have plenty of motivation in Miami. Perhaps he’ll look to draw inspiration from Brock Purdy and Matt Cassell, a pair of former seventh-round picks who carved out successful NFL careers for themselves.
