‘Absolute epic’ – Chris Eubank Jr beats Conor Benn in all-time classic bout to settle feud

Chris Eubank Jr beat Conor Benn to settle their family feud in one of British boxing’s all-time classics.

Eubank Jr and Benn met in the squared circle after four years of their own personal rivalry, and a 35-year family feud from their father Nigel and Chris’ original battles in 1990 and 1993.

The build-up had been full of drama, tension and excitement with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium packed to the rafters.

Eubank Jr and Benn finally got their hands on each other in an explosive counter, one of British boxing’s most iconic rivalries of all-time.

And it was Eubank Jr who had his hand raised, with three 116-112 cards placed all in his favour by the judges.

The contest was an all-time classic and drew shades of their fathers’ epic battle 35 years ago.

Eubank Jr collapsed to his knees in celebration, and it was an emotional moment after such a brave effort from both fighters.

talkSPORT commentator John Rawling could barely believe what he was witnessing and remarked: “What an epic, it’s one to compare to the first fight between their fathers.”

Nigel Benn’s ex-rival Steve Collins added: “This has been one of the best fights I’ve seen in a long time, that last round was like a movie.”

It appears clear that a rematch will now be called for given the closeness of the encounter, which could land later in 2025.

Benn walked to the same soundtrack of his father’s famous walk-on, ‘Dangerous’ by Conroy Smith, while Eubank Jr was accompanied to the ring by his own father’s ‘Simply the Best’ by Tina Turner, before a brass brand played ‘Still Dre’ by Dr Dre.

The iconic walk-ons set the tone for a mouth-watering encounter, and there was an almighty roar as the opening bell sounded.

Eubank Jr and Benn began trading blows largely in the centre ring, with little given away in a chess-like opening period.

Jeers broke out in the second round as both fighters looked to feel their way into the contest, with Benn perhaps the slightly more happy to open up and look to land some hooks with bad intentions.

‘The Destroyer’ was on top in the third, and caught Eubank Jr with some glancing blows, but the A-side fighter was well involved and tried to weather the early storm.

Eubank Jr opened up in the fourth letting his hands go, landing a neat combination followed by a swift uppercut, and the tide felt like it was turning.

And the screw turned in the fifth and sixth with Benn struggling to land at the same rate of early accuracy.

‘Next Gen’ started to look the better in the exchanges and started to land some thudding blows as the halfway point approached.

He was looking for the more accurate punches, but Benn had a hugely promising barrage in the eighth to halt the momentum.

Eubank Jr responded and let his own shots go on the ropes, drawing the crowd to their feet in the best round of the encounter so far.

A cut opened up next to Eubank Jr’s right eye in the ninth period as their heads clashed, and proceedings turned into a real slug-fest in the ninth, with both bitter foes going toe-to-toe.

Things continued to open up in the tenth with Benn really trying to pile on the pressure, and it became a real dog-fight.

Eubank Jr started to box well in the eleventh, but was caught once again into a real war of attrition as the championship round approached.

The twelfth round turned into an incredible war, as Eubank Jr battered Benn with some huge shots including a thunderous left hook.

Benn took the shots well and held on for dear life, unloading his own tank with the crowd captivated and on their feet.

And it was a tough encounter to call, but Eubank Jr got the nod, and his emotional celebration reflected just how much the saga meant.
