Wrexham have done it again – securing promotion to the Championship at the first attempt.
The 3-0 League One home win over Charlton means the Dragons have achieved promotion in three straight seasons, ascending from the fifth-tier of English football to the second.
All of this has come after their Hollywood takeover in 2021, with co-owner actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in pieces at full-time.
This is the first time any team has secured three successive promotions in the top five tiers of English football, and the Welsh side did it with a game to spare.
The match between promotion hopefuls Charlton was moved to a later slot due to the attention around it, and Phil Parkinson’s side lived up to the hype.
Goals from Oliver Rathbone and Sam Smith gave Wrexham a comfortable lead at the Racecourse Ground inside 18 minutes and their opponents never responded.
Smith then completed the job in the 81st minute with a sublime header that sent the home crowd into raptures.
The ascent represents a remarkable turnaround under Reynolds and McElhenney, who took over the side in the National League, where they’d been stuck for 15 years.
An eighth place finish in their first half season was finished by second in the owner’s sophomore campaign, meaning they missed out on promotion as only one National League team graduates to the professional League Two.
Yet since then the only way has been up, finishing second in League Two last year and the same again in League One this term.
The Welsh side are now only one level away from the Premier League, a footballing fairy tale given the history and passionate support of one of world football’s oldest teams.
