Once overhead-sized suitcases were invented, they quickly became the preferred carry-on of many passengers. The small rolling suitcases are more convenient and comfortable to lug through an airport than duffel bags or backpacks, and they can hold more belongings (always a plus!). Also, as someone who traveled full-time for years on a budget, I was frequently a victim of the fate of those in the last boarding groups: having to check my carry-on anyway due to lack of space in the overhead compartments. So, having a hard-shell suitcase offers more protection if your bag has to go down under.
But good suitcases and budget don’t usually fit in the same sentence. Top-rated luggage can cost an arm and leg, and with the rising prices of every aspect of travel, it’s hard to justify dishing out that much on a bag. And you actually don’t have to. I’ve tested out many brands of carry-on suitcases, from BEIS to Samsonite, throughout my extensive travels, and my favorite overall is the 21-inch carry-on luggage from Amazon Basics. Here's my review of it.

Why You Should Trust Us
Not all that long ago, I was a full-time traveler, lugging all types of backpacks and suitcases around the globe. Throughout my journey between continents, I went through many bags, backpacks and suitcases, and the ones I still have to this day are the few tried and true that withstood any plane, train or automobile ride. This suitcase is one still in my closet right now.

Amazon Basics 21" Hardside Carry-On Luggage, $65.99
Amazon Basics makes products in a range of categories, from kitchen appliances to personal care items; some of them are dependable and total steals, and others aren’t worth what you’d save on them. This carry-on suitcase aligns with the former; it’s sturdy, sleek, practical and—best of all—a great deal. At just $66 (or less if it’s on sale, which it frequently is!), this suitcase is well worth it when you consider how long it will last you.
I’ve been traveling regularly with mine for nearly five years, and this suitcase doesn’t have so much as a scratch. That’s more than I can say about any other suitcase I’ve had, regardless of its size or age; all of the other ones I’ve had have ended up with a broken wheel, a crack in the shell or at least an unsightly scrape on the side from being thrown around. My Amazon Basics carry-on is in perfect condition, even though it’s been checked just as many times as any other bag. It rolls well, it’s easy to maneuver and it’s always felt light, no matter how much I cram in it. The bag is available in a handful of colors; I opted for black, and I still get surprised by how nice it looks.

The bag has the perks of a bigger suitcase in a carry-on package. It has an expandable zipper for up to 25% more storage while still fitting comfortably in an overhead compartment. Its extra-thick shell is resistant to cracks or scratches and will keep your belongings well-protected. Its multi-directional wheels make rolling a breeze, as does its telescope handle. And its price is a breeze on the wallet.
