Catholic churches across the region will pay tribute to Pope Francis on Saturday, the day of his funeral.
Parishes across the Diocese of San Diego are set to ring their bells at noon for one minute as a sign of respect and prayer for the pope, who died Monday.
Each church also will hold a Memorial Mass for the Pope on Wednesday at a time, the diocese said, “that serves” its community.
Officials advised that those who are interested in attending should check with their local parish.
The diocese administrator, Auxiliary Bishop Michael Pham, recalled Pope Francis in a statement Monday.
“He was never afraid to speak out and remind us that we all share the gifts of God’s love and mercy, to show his determination that we care for one another, that we put our faith in action, that we show respect in how we treat our fellow women and men, and how we treat the environment around us,” Pham said.
Pope Francis, 88, had been ailing. He was hospitalized for more than a month after a Feb. 14 respiratory issue turned into a case of double pneumonia. Yet he recovered enough to make a final appearance on Easter, the day before his death. Though he sat in a wheelchair, he blessed the faithful in St. Peter’s Square.
He served as pope for 12 years.
