Chris Eubank Jr gives first reaction to bumper weight miss fine in sly dig at Eddie Hearn and Conor Benn

Chris Eubank Jr isn’t concerned about losing $500,000 (£375,000) on the scales.

The Brighton boxer was forced to hand over half a million dollars to Conor Benn on Friday morning after missing weight by half an ounce.

Eubank Jr turned up over an hour late for the behind-closed-doors weigh-in and tipped the scales at 160.2lbs on his first attempt before returning to weigh 160.05lbs in an agonising second and last attempt.

Benn, who has primarily campaigned at welterweight (147lbs), came in comfortably below the 160lbs middleweight limit at 156.4lbs.

The two fighters will now weigh in again early on Saturday morning at their hotels in order to fulfil the terms of the 10lbs rehydration clause inserted into their contracts.

There are concerns that Eubank Jr won’t be able to keep the weight off.

He looked very gaunt as he faced off with Benn at the ceremonial weigh-in on Friday afternoon, surrounded by a sea of security.

However, he seemed unfazed by the further weight restrictions and his bumper fine when he spoke to the DAZN broadcast before exiting the stage.

“It is what it is,” he said. “If they are going to take half a million off me for being 0.5 [ounces] off of the limit, then it is what it is.

“That is the people that Eddie Hearn, Matchroom and Conor Benn are.

“At the end of the day, weight has no relevance to what happens tomorrow night.

“I’m going to go out there a stop this guy…

“The rehydration clause is still in play, so I have to watch what I eat and what I drink, but again, all these things are set up to distract, to get me off track. None of it will work…

“He’s in for a hell of a surprise, he thinks he is going to go out there and hop, skip and [land] a right hand as he says.

“But he has no idea the pain that is in store for him tomorrow night.”

Benn was also quizzed on Eubank Jr’s weight issues.

To which, he responded: “It’s an expensive price to play, but he’s disciplined; he should have made the weight.

“He has made this weight his whole career. He is expecting a bit of sympathy, but he isn’t getting any sympathy around here.”
