NEW England Patriots’ newest star couldn’t contain his emotion after being selected in the NFL Draft.
The Patriots held the No. 4 overall selection in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Thursday night.
Their pick was the worst kept secret leading up to the NFL Draft.
The team selected tackle Will Campbell from Louisiana State University.
The offensive lineman was interviewed on the stage by NFL Network’s Jamie Erdahl.
And he broke down in tears of happiness.
Erdahl asked him what was behind his huge smile.
“Just all the hard work,” he said before he began to cry.
The fans in attendance began to cheer while NFL Network star Erdahl told him “congratulations.”
Campbell was able to compose himself and continue the interview.
“I’ve worked my entire life to be up here,” the 21-year-old said.
“To get my name called by a franchise like New England means the world to me.”
The offensive lineman was also asked about the Patriots’ young quarterback Drake Maye.
“I’m going to fight and die to protect him with everything I’ve got,” Campbell said.
Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel met with Campbell before the NFL Draft.
And the offensive lineman had an unusual greeting.
“How would you like to punch your future boss on a job interview?” ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported.
“Well, that’s one way that LSU star Will Campbell won over Patriots coach Mike Vrabel.
“Last Thursday, the top Patriots brass and Vrabel traveled to Baton Rouge to work out Campbell.
“Vrabel ran the workout and wore a blocking pad over his chest.
“In a drill to execute a drive block, sources said that Campbell hit Vrabel square in the chest and knocked Vrabel back on his derriere.
“Vrabel loved it and had a big smile on his face as he gathered himself and got up.”
