Shedeur Sanders offered a defiant message after sliding out of the first round of the NFL Draft.
The Colorado Buffaloes quarterback, who enjoyed a prolific 2024 season and posted an all-time FBS record with a 71.8 percent career completion rate, was a wild card heading into Thursday night.
Coming out of college, Sanders — son of NFL legend Deion — was in the conversation to be taken first overall, but his stock began to slide after he emerged as one of the most polarising prospects on the NFL Draft board.
Days ahead of the event, he was blasted as the worst ‘interview ever’ by an anonymous NFL coach.
Sanders was not picked during the draft’s opening round and now waits for his fate to be decided heading into Friday and the start of Round 2.
Miami quarterback Cam Ward was taken first overall by the Tennessee Titans, while another signal caller in Jaxson Dart was picked ahead of Sanders by the New York Giants at 25.
The top pick, though, has been coldly compared to forgotten top quarterback.
After the events of the first round unfolded on Thursday, Shedeur shared his thoughts as he looks forward to night two of the draft.
“We all didn’t expect this, of course,” he told the crowd who had gathered to watch the draft alongside him.
“But I feel like with God, anything’s possible — everything’s possible.
“I don’t feel like this happened for no reason. All this is of course fuel to the fire.
“Under no circumstance — we all know this shouldn’t have happened. But we understand, we’re on to bigger and better things.

It’s fair to say that ESPN analyst Mel Kiper didn’t expect Sanders to remain on the board through 20 rounds, as he compared the Buffaloes prospect to the great Aaron Rodgers.
Back in 2005, Rodgers was taken 24th overall after he entered the draft with a lot of hype, and was even touted as the first pick.
However, he suffered a painful draft slide and was just about picked in the first round.
He went on to win Super Bowl XLV with the Green Bay Packers, and has also been named the NFL‘s MVP on four occasions.
“With Shedeur, I’m amazed he’s still on the board. As I was with Aaron Rodgers,” Kiper said, drawing comparisons.
“I’m going to wait and see who makes a move to get Shedeur Sanders before I start talking about those organisations, and how that will haunt them.”
Round two of the 2025 NFL Draft will commence on Friday.
