Santa Ana man sentenced for distributing fentanyl to teenage girl who died from overdose

A Santa Ana man was sentenced to 23 years in prison Thursday, April 24, after he distributed fentanyl to a 17-year-old girl who died from an overdose.

Anthony Aguirre, 25, also pleaded guilty in July to being a felon in possession of a firearm. In addition to prison time, he was sentenced to eight years of supervised release, according to federal prosecutors.

In September 2022, Aguirre sold 10 pills that contained fentanyl to an unnamed buyer and two of their friends, according to his plea agreement. One of the friends, the 17-year-old girl, took at least one of the pills and died from acute fentanyl intoxication.

Prosecutors allege Aguirre sold at least 11 pills containing fentanyl to a minor in Tustin for $15 a pill in October 2022.

He also allegedly sold pills to a 14-year-old girl on multiple occasions. In October 2022, the girl told Aguirre she was throwing up, and he told her she was experiencing withdrawal and needed more pills to feel better, according to the plea agreement.

Aguirre reportedly sold the girl three pills containing fentanyl in Huntington Beach. She experienced an overdose but survived.

In November 2022, Aguirre unknowingly sold 10 pills containing fentanyl for $150 to an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration agent in Costa Mesa. During the exchange, Aguirre told the agent to be careful after a friend had died from using the same pills, according to the plea agreement.

Aguirre reportedly distributed pills containing fentanyl to two more minors later that month, and one of them overdosed and survived, the plea agreement said.

In December 2022, Aguirre again arranged a transaction with an undercover DEA agent. When he arrived, Costa Mesa police officers conducted a traffic stop and found a small bag in the driver’s side doors with 20 pills that contained fentanyl, according to the plea agreement.

Officers searched Aguirre’s Santa Ana home the same day as the traffic stop and found various narcotics in his kitchen cabinets, including nearly 1,300 pills that contained about 163 grams of fentanyl, about 38 grams of a mixture and substance that contained methamphetamine, 25 grams of MDMA, 77 grams of cocaine and about 300 tablets containing around 95 grams of Bromazolam, the plea deal said.

Police also found a small weight scale with drug residue, small baggies used to package drugs and a loaded semi-automatic pistol, according to the plea agreement.
