Though mainstream success eluded the band, Pere Ubu was hugely influential on several other acts who adopted elements of their style that mixed industrial and other avant-garde elements with ‘60s garage rock, including Joy Division, Gang of Four, the Pixies, Julian Cope and others.
Pere Ubu was formed in Cleveland in 1975 and lasted through 1982 during their initial run but was revived in 1987 and had been an ongoing concern since. Thomas was the band’s lone original member in the group throughout the years.
Prior to Pere Ubu, Thomas was a member of Rocket from the Tombs, another influential proto-punk group that included future members of the Dead Boys during their run from 1974-1975.
“David Thomas and his band have been recording a new album. He knew it was to be his last. We will endeavour to continue with mixing and finalising the new album so that his last music is available to all,” the statement on the band’s Facebook account continued. “Aside from that, he left instruction that the work should continue to catalog all the tapes from live shows via the official bandcamp page. His autobiography was nearly completed and we will finish that for him. Pere Ubu’s Patreon will continue as a community, run by communex.
“We’ll leave you with his own words, which sums up who he was better than we can – ‘My name is David F--king Thomas… and I’m the lead singer of the best f--king rock n roll band in the world.’ (Frigo Documentary) Long Live Pere Ubu,” it concluded.
