Puri: The state-level National Panchayati Raj Day was celebrated in Puri.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized that rural development is essential for the progress of the state and nation.
Noting that 69% of India’s population and 83% of Odisha’s population lives in rural areas, he stated that development is unattainable without uplifting villages.
He highlighted the Panchayati Raj system as the cornerstone of governance, transformed by the 73rd Constitutional Amendment on April 24, 1993. This day is observed to honor public participation in governance.
Majhi noted that the system has been instrumental in addressing basic issues in Odisha, with many gram panchayats earning national recognition over the past three years.
Currently, 50% of Panchayati Raj seats are reserved for women, and Odisha has become a model for women’s empowerment through this system, said Majhi.
He credited women representatives for driving regional development.
The event was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo, Deputy Chief Minister and Women & Child Development Minister Pravati Parida, Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water Minister Rabi Narayan Naik, Sports & Youth Services Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra, and Puri MP Sambit Patra.
