Actor Penn Badgley was just as shocked as the rest of the world when he learned that his Gossip Girl co-star, Michelle Trachtenberg, had died. In a recent interview with E! News, Badgley opened up about the actress' sudden passing.
"What I remember of her is she was incredibly quick to laugh," he told the outlet while on the red carpet at the April 23 premiere of his hit Netflix show, You. "She was really joyous. We all have our ups and downs, our lights and shadows, but she had this—I mean, she was mature, but she had this childlike, joyous laugh."
Badgley admitted that he hadn't seen Trachtenberg in over 10 years, but was saddened to hear the news nevertheless.
"It’s surreal," he continued. "Really surreal, really saddening."
Trachtenberg was found dead in her New York City apartment back in February. Following a toxicology report, New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner told People magazine that the actress' cause of death was complications of diabetes mellitus. Her death was ruled as natural.
The 39-year-old actress was said to be very sick before her death.
"She was really, really sick and open with those in her circle about how much she was struggling. [She was] pale, gaunt, very thin, and dealing with health issues," a source told People.
This was the first time that Badgley spoke about Trachtenberg's death. Many of her other co-stars, including Blake Lively, released statements after hearing the tragic news. At the time, Lively took to her Instagram Stories to pay tribute to the late star.
"She was electricity. You knew when she entered a room because the vibration changed. Everything she did, she did 200%," Lively wrote, in part. "She laughed the fullest at someone's joke, she faced authority head on when she felt something was wrong, she cared deeply about her work, she was proud to be a part of this community and industry as painful as it could be sometimes, she was fiercely loyal to her friends and brave for those she loved, she was big and bold and distinctly herself."
