The moment British volunteer is shot during an ambush on Russian troops in Kursk

Dramatic battlefield footage shared with The i Paper shows British fighters storming a Russian position before one soldier is shot in an ambush during Ukraine’s Kursk offensive.

Soldiers with Ukraine’s International Legion attacked a village where Russian troops were hiding after their armoured vehicles were blown up.

A 12-man team hurled grenades, fired rocket launchers, including Bulspike anti-armour rounds and opened up with machine guns during the raid in Lyubimovka.

An ex-British Army soldier who took part in September’s assault said five British volunteers were involved and three were wounded, with two Russians killed and another two escaping into nearby forest.

GoPro footage shows a British soldier being hit in the leg but continuing to shoot his weapon during a firefight with Russian troops when their patrol was ambushed at close quarters during Ukraine’s surprise incursion into the Kursk region.

One of the men, who previously served in The Rifles regiment, said he was inspired to fight in Ukraine after helping train Ukrainian troops in the UK as part of Operation Interflex in 2022.

An ex-British Army soldier has described taking part in an attack on Russian forces in the Kursk region during Ukraine’s surprise incursion

The soldier, originally from London who uses the call sign “Knight”, told The i Paper of the assault: “We got tasked to go and clear out the remaining forces of the Russian assault units that survived.

“The Ukrainians that were defending the positions at this village managed to destroy most of their armoured vehicles.

“We deployed just before the sun came up and began with a large rate of fire from RPGs and machine guns.

“We didn’t really know how many guys were in this house until afterwards. We all prepared for the worst.

“One of the Russians died by grenade, and then the other one died presumably by the initial rate of fire when we started RPGing the house.”

A team of international volunteers launched a dawn assault on a Russian position in a village

The international platoon which took part in the assault, which also included French, Americans and Australian volunteers, was part of the 2nd Battalion, International Legion’s tactical group.

Following the attack, a four-man clearance patrol was sent into the forest where Russian troops ambushed and opened fire on them from just a few feet away.

The point British soldier was shot in the leg and fell to the ground, but carried on firing his weapon as he called out “contact” to his comrades.

“One round hit his knee and went through, and then the other one hit his rifle. And then luckily, one skims his helmet, but missed his head completely,” said Knight.

“He instantly started putting suppressing fire down. It felt like a long time while under fire, in the open, where we couldn’t really dig down or or find any hard cover.

“The point man and his team leader decided to take the initiative and run straight out into the open fields just to get out of the killing area. Normally, people don’t survive ambushes.

“Me and my team leader took turns to peel back. I decided to give him suppressive fire first, so I’d let him move behind me, and then we just provided each other with covering fire.”

He heard the bullets whizzing past him as they retreated to safety.

“That was my first time being ambushed in the open with no cover like that,” he said.

“Hearing the rounds going past you from behind, I was thinking if I’m going to get hit it’s going to be in the back of my legs or the back of my body armour.”

Another British fighter was injured by mortar shrapnel as they extracted the first casualty, with a Russian drone spying on them guiding in the enemy fire.

The soldier, originally from London who uses the call sign ‘Knight’, decided to volunteer to fight in Ukraine after helping train Ukrainian troops during five years in the British Army

“When it exploded behind me, the shrapnel luckily missed me and unfortunately, hit the guy in front of me, and lacerated the right side of his hip,” he said.

“I saw him go down and I could see he was in a lot of pain.”

A third British fighter was wounded in the shoulder and legs by mortar shrapnel as they ran across open fields.

This month, Russia recaptured a monastery that was one of the last remaining Ukrainian positions in the Kursk region after 10 days of fierce fighting.

Hundreds of British nationals are believed to have fought in Ukraine against Russian troops since Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion in 2022 despite the Government warning not to travel to take part in combat.

After arriving in January, 2024, Knight said he spent six months fighting in trenches in the Luhansk region defending assaults from Russian troops.

A soldier who took part in the operation described ‘brutal’ fighting during his 15 months in Ukraine

The war has been “brutal”, he said, with a huge increase in First Person View (FPV) kamikaze drone attacks this year.

He was motivated to fight in the warzone after five years in the British Army where he helped train Ukrainian troops as part of a multinational military operation.

“I met a lot of amazing guys, and unfortunately some of them aren’t here anymore. They died because they were on the Kharkiv offensive back in 2022,” he said.

“I decided I want to leave the army and help these guys out and do something good.

“I made a promise I would come over and help fight.”
