SAN FRANCISCO — Roughly two weeks ago, Logan Webb took the mound at Oracle Park against the ace of a team from the NL Central, pitched a fantastic outing and ended up with a no decision. On Wednesday night, Webb again took the mound at Oracle Park against the ace of a team from the NL Central and pitched a fantastic outing. This time around, he ended up with a win next to his name.
Webb outdueled Freddy Peralta as the Giants (16-9) defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 4-2, pitching 6 1/3 scoreless innings with six strikeouts to three walks as he recorded his fourth quality start of the year.
San Francisco entered the top of the ninth inning with a comfortable four-run lead, but the game’s final frame was not without drama.
Ryan Walker took the mound in the ninth for the first time since blowing his first save of the year, and San Francisco’s closer endured another tumultuous outing — one in which he did not finish the game. The Brewers set the table by. loading the bases with one out, and Turang drove in a pair with an opposite-field, two-run, ground-rule double. That swing trimmed San Francisco’s lead to 4-2 and forced manager Bob Melvin to go to Camilo Doval with runners on second and third. Doval proceeded to strike out Jackson Chourio and get Chrisitan Yelich to ground out, slamming the door on Milwaukee’s comeback effort.
Webb found himself in a jam in the top of the second inning when the Brewers (13-12) loaded the bases on a walk and two singles, but the right-hander weaseled his way out of the jam by striking out Jackson Chourio with the bases loaded.
In the sixth, Webb put up another zero with a major assist from his defense. William Contreras attempted to advance from first-to-third on Sal Frelick’s single to right field, but Mike Yastrzemski made threw a textbook one-hopper to an awaiting Matt Chapman, who applied the tag and recorded the out. Rhys Hoskins, the following batter, hit a tricky one-hopper at second baseman Christian Koss, but Koss played the ball on the hop, slid counterclockwise and threw to first for the out to end the inning.
