Olympians, Former NCAA Champions Headline 2025 U.S. Masters Championships In San Antonio

2025 U.S. Masters Swimming Spring National Championships

San Antonio will play host to the U.S. Masters Swimming Spring National Championships this week, marking the fourth time the city has held a USMS pool national meet.

    There are 1,741 swimmers representing five countries set to compete at the meet, including 91 local athletes from San Antonio.

    The four-day competition will include at least nine former Olympians in the field, including American medalists Dave Wharton and Ashley Whitney, and Swedish medalist Michael Soderlund.

    Also competing will be Danish Olympian and former NC State Wolpfack Anton Ipsen, the 2018 NCAA champion in the men’s 1650 freestyle.

    Ipsen is entered in the men’s 200, 500 and 1000 free, 200 back and 400 IM, competing in the men’s 30-34 age group.

    Casey Barrett, Canada, 1996 Anton Ipsen, Denmark, 2016-20 Vesna Shelnutt, North Macedonia, 2000-04 Michael Soderlund, Sweden, 1980-84-88 (1 bronze) Eduardo Solaeche, Spain, 2016 Kirk Stackle, USA, 1988 Juan Valdivieso, Peru, 2000-04 Dave Wharton, USA, 1988-92 (1 silver) Ashley Whitney, USA, 1996 (1 gold)

    Two other notable names racing on the men’s side include Tom Kremer, a multi-time NCAA ‘A’ finalist at Stanford, and Tom Luchsinger, the 2013 U.S. national champion in the men’s 200 fly.

    The women’s field includes former Stanford star Ally Howe, the 2018 NCAA champion in the women’s 100 back, who is also the former American Record holder in the event in 49.69.

    Howe, competing in the women’s 25-29 age group, is entered in the 50, 100 and 200 back, the 100 and 200 IM, and the 100 fly.

    The competition will feature seven swimmers aged 90 or older, with local San Antonio resident Louis Raiborn being the oldest at 93. There are also 49 other swimmers aged 80-plus.
