Nicky Henderson confirms Jonbon jockey change and provides Constitution Hill update

Trainer Nicky Henderson has confirmed Mark Walsh will be coming in to replace Nico de Boinville to ride Jonbon this weekend after the stable jockey recovers from his fall at Plumpton.

The 35-year-old rider for Seven Barrows has suffered broken ribs and neck injuries as a result from his fall and a kick last week, showing just how much jockeys go through from these kinds of incidents.

As a result, the former Champion trainer was searching for a replacement with the upcoming jumps finale at Sandown Park Racecourse.

Jonbon is the odds-on favourite for the bet365 Celebration Chase on Saturday after bouncing back in style to win at Aintree in the Grand National Festival earlier this month.

The nine-year-old shocked punters when placing second at Cheltenham Festival back in March.

But after a shuddering mistake that cost the race he impressed yet again just a month later to win his 18th race in just 22 runs.

Henderson confirmed on his blog for Unibet of the jockey change explaining: “FIRSTLY I want to say thank you to everyone for their thoughts and kind messages following Nico’s fall, which we have passed onto him. He is now back at home and will need to rest. We don’t know exactly when he’ll be back riding but we wish him a speedy recovery.

“In the meantime we do have to make riding plans for our horses and Mark Walsh will come over to Sandown Park on Saturday to ride Jonbon.

Henderson also gave an update on Constitution Hill while De Boinville is out recovering, detailing that an important piece of work for the super star will be conducted on Friday so will be ridden by James Bowen.

And all being well, Henderson has suggested all systems will be a go for Punchestown.

Lulamba could also be going to Ireland based on how the weekend goes schooling and the Seven Barrows trainer said: “It’s a brave shout but I’m very happy with him [Lulamba] and James [Bowen] would also take ride if we line up.”

It’s worth noting however, that Jonbon has seen a few jockey changes over the years.

Derek O’Connor rode him on his first ever race in a point to point in November 2020.

Aidan Coleman was on board from November 2021 to April 2023 totalling 11 runs and only two second place finishes.

Bowen also rode Jonbon at the rescheduled Grade 1 Clarence House Chase at Cheltenham in January 2024.

De Boinville has ridden Jonbon for every other race though and clearly get on well.

Walsh gets a huge chance to win on the big day at Sandown, who often adorns the green and gold hoops of owner JP McManus.
