BCCI issued strict order after Pahalgam attack: Don’t play cricket with Pakistan

A horrifying terror attack shook the peaceful tourist town of Pahalgam in South Kashmir on April 22, as gunmen opened fire on innocent civilians at a bustling tourist hotspot. This brutality took the lives of at least 26 people and left over 20 injured, spreading grief and chaos across the country.

The brutal incident has sent shockwaves across the nation, triggering an outpouring of grief and fury. Among those who voiced their outrage was former Indian cricketer Shreevats Goswami. He took to his social media to express his anger and demand strong action against the culprits.

In the wake of the bloodshed, Goswami added fuel to the ongoing debate about whether India should continue playing cricket with Pakistan with his latest outburst. According to Al Jazeera, the Resistance Front (TRF), suspected to be linked to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam terror attack.

Earlier this year, the BCCI had already decided against sending the Indian cricket team to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and opted to play all matches in the UAE. Following the latest inhuman act, Goswami feels this move isn’t enough.

Reacting to the horrific Pahalgam attack, the former Indian cricketer strongly demanded that the BCCI cut all cricketing ties with Pakistan. Shreevats Goswami wrote in his long post on X: “And this is exactly why I say—you don't play cricket with Pakistan. Not now. Not ever.”

We must respond Pakistan with dignity and zero tolerance: Shreevats Goswami

He continued, “When BCCI or the government refused to send India to the Champions Trophy in Pakistan, some had the audacity to say, ‘Oh, but sport should rise above politics.’ Really? Because from where I stand, murdering innocent civilians seems to be their national sport. And if that's how they play, then it's time we respond in a language they truly understand. Not with bats and balls. But with resolve. With dignity. With zero tolerance.”

The former Indian wicketkeeper further revealed that he had visited Pahalgam recently for the Legends League Cricket and had seen signs of peace and hope returning to Kashmir. He said that the Pahalgam terror attack shattered the progress and spirit of Kashmir. Goswami also called for stronger action from the government and the BCCI, as silence is no longer an option.

Shreevats Goswami feels for Kashmiris as the Pahalgam Attack will impact the tourism economy

Goswami signed off by saying, “I'm furious. I'm devastated. Just a few months ago, I was in Kashmir for the Legends League—I walked through Pahalgam, met the locals, and saw hope returning to their eyes. It felt like peace had finally found its way back. And now, this bloodshed again. It breaks something inside you. It makes you question how many more times we're expected to stay silent, stay "sporting," while our people die. No more. Not this time.”

On the other hand, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also expressed deep sorrow over the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam. He strongly condemned the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. Saikia said that the cricketing community stands united in this moment of grief.

Notably, authorities revealed that the terrorists selected a remote, non-motorable spot, which is famous among honeymooners and adventure seekers, so that they could easily carry out their deadly mission.
