Conor Benn forced Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent to ‘quit sparring’ ahead of Chris Eubank Jr fight

Conor Benn made undefeated IBF champion William Scull quit while preparing for his Chris Eubank Jr grudge match.

That’s according to his father, who has claimed his son ‘put it on’ Scull from for the first bell, and the latter was unable to make it out for the eighth round.

Benn faces Eubank Jr on Saturday night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for what is set to be an epic all-British affair.

Both men will trade heavy leather exactly 35 years after their legendary fathers had it out with one another in the squared circle.

Benn is moving up to middleweight for the first time in his career for the fight, while Eubank Jr is shredding down to 160 pounds and will have to overcome adversity this week to make that limit.

The pair have endured intense training camps leading up to their contest, with Benn based out in Palma, Mallorca, and Eubank Jr staying local in London.

Benn has had his dad, Nigel Benn, by his side throughout camp, unlike his opponent Eubank Jr – whose father called him a disgrace in a scathing attack just weeks out from the fight.

Speaking to iFL TV, Nigel oozed confidence as he boasted about his son standing toe-to-toe with Scull, who takes on Canelo for all four super-middleweight titles on May 3.

“[Conor] was sparring with light heavyweights, no problem,” Nigel explained.

“Then, the biggest one of them all…this guy walked into the gym, 12-handed, and God is my witnesses, everything that I’m telling you is the truth.

“He walked in the gym, but I didn’t know who he was. It was this guy called William Scull.

“And he was sparring at around round four or five. He said, ‘Oh no, I need a minute.’

“Conor only does for 40 seconds. Then afterwards, about round four and five, you can ask everybody else.

“He was sitting down on the ring cushion on the ring rope because he was kind of tired.

“Come to round five six and seven. He started feeling the pace…then around eight Conor put it on him.

“What did he do? Stop sparring. William Scull. These all like light heavyweights. They weren’t at weight.

“But I’m telling you the truth. Conor put it on him…he couldn’t even come out for the eighth round!”

Nigel lost to fellow British boxing icon Chris Eubank Sr in 1990 before they drew three years later in controversial style.

Now, over three decades later, Nigel, alongside Benn’s sisters and cousin, is by his son’s side as they gear up for the biggest fight of his career.

Meanwhile, super-middleweight IBF champion Scull takes on Mexican superstar Canelo for all four of his division’s belts at the start of May.

Canelo was stripped of the IBF super-middleweight title in July after refusing to fight Scull, who was his mandatory at the time.

Instead, Canelo opted to take on Edgar Berlanga in September while Scull was matched up against Vladimir Shishkin in a vacant IBF world title fight in October, which he won, albeit controversially, via unanimous decision.

Now, Canelo is looking to retrieve the IBF belt and unify it with his other three major world titles (WBC, WBA and WBO) to become undisputed super middleweight champion once more.

Providing he comes through the fight unscathed, he will then box Terence Crawford in a much-anticipated super fight in September.

Canelo is one of boxing’s greatest ever pound-for-pound champions
