NBC Washington reports that the last Radio Shack in Maryland is closing down this week.

It is located in Prince Frederick, which is about 45 miles north of DC, and will close on Saturday April 26.

The store has been open for about 50 years, and the owner passed away in January.

This is believed to be a big reason why the Radio Shack is closing.

The news reporter for NBC, who took a last walk around the store, called it like “taking a walk back into time.”

She takes us round the scarce shelves, with radio antennas, landline phones and a CD changer still available to purchase.

This is despite that technology having been aged out for years.

In fact the store manager, Cindy, has worked there for 34 years herself.

She described the closure as “heartbreaking.”

And to make it worse, some shoppers didn’t even know it was closing.

Many in Maryland still rely on the technology, too, as landline phones are still commonly used.

If you fancy saving a lot of money on some retro tech, everything in the store is currently 50% off.

That number will only increase closer to the closing day.

    SHOPPERS REMINISCE

It’s clear how much Radio Shack still means to people judging by the reminiscent social media reactions.

The caption of the Facebook post sharing the news footage says: “The last Radio Shack closing in Prince Frederick MD (35 miles southwest of DC) this week.

“I lived 45 miles north of DC in plain old “Frederick” Maryland, about 80 miles northwest of this store and I remember the Frederick Towne Mall had one decades ago.

“This one is a standalone store.”

US braces for '45,000 store closures'

Some 45,000 bricks-and-mortar stores could close in the next five years, experts have warned.

Several major retailers have announced store closures or gone out of business altogether in recent years.

In 2023, chains such as Foot Locker announced plans to close up to 400 outlets by 2026.

While, other well-known retailers like Tuesday Morning and Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams filed for bankruptcy in 2023.

Bed Bath & Beyond has closed all of its brick-and-mortar stores and is now an online-only retailer.

The most affected retailers have been clothing, consumer electronics, sporting goods, hobby, book, music, and home furnishing stores since the start of 2019.

UBS has predicted the total number of retail stores will drop by 45k from 958k to 913k.

Despite that, the report says that certain stores should thrive while others decline.

It said retailers such as Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, and Target, could be among the winners.

Shoppers took to social media to share stories about everything Radio Shack has meant to them over the years.

One person said: “My late husband was obsessed with Radio Shack.

“He was an electrician and a tinkerer and loved going in there to get parts for his latest creations.”

Another nostalgic customer added:”…Back in the 1990s I sold hundreds of retired classroom record players and they still had the needles they took!”

According to a Reddit thread from ten months ago, there are still some Radio Shacks standing.

One person said: “Went to El Salvador on business trips a few times and I would always make it a point to go to RadioShack.

    “They’re thriving in Central America.

“I think the Central American company recently bought the rights to the RadioShack name.”
