Diamondbacks prospect Jordan Lawlar is crushing the ball in Triple-A

Jordan Lawlar, the top-ranked prospect in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ farm system, is among the hottest hitters in Minor League Baseball for Triple-A Reno.

FanGraphs placed the infielder No. 1 on its minor league power rankings after a monster six-game series against the Round Rock Express. He finished 9-for-22 with six extra-base hits and nine RBIs. He’s got five home runs in his last 10 games.

Sunday’s game especially showed off his power and speed, considering he hit a ball to the moon and bunted for an RBI single.

In 21 games, Lawlar has delivered a batting line of .325/.423/.627 with five home runs and eight stolen bases. He is tied for the Pacific Coast League lead in extra bases (14) and is second in total bases (52). The only player with as many extra-base hits and more total bases is Nick Kurtz, whom the Athletics just called up.

The PCL is notoriously hitter-friendly, but Lawlar’s 39.9% hard-hit rate and 89.4 mph exit velocity so far are highs for him at the level.

“He’s controlling the strike zone, he’s managing his at-bats well,” D-backs director of player development Chris Slivka told Arizona Sports. “He’s not missing his pitch and he’s a tough at-bat. Even the other day, it was great to see him put down a bunt for a base hit.

“So he’s just becoming more well-rounded as a baseball player. Seeing him use the entire field, driving the ball, it’s good to see.”

Lawlar, the 2021 No. 6 overall pick, is now 22 years old. He has 14 MLB games of experience from 2023 before an injury-plagued 2024.

Defense is key to his ascent, particularly versatility.

Lawlar was optioned during a strong spring training to play everyday for the Aces with Arizona stocking a set infield.

When second baseman Ketel Marte suffered a hamstring injury earlier this month, the club called up Tim Tawa, who had started the season hot and had more reps at the position.

The D-backs feel good about Lawlar’s ability to fill in on the left side of the infield as a shortstop whose received playing time at third base. The Aces worked to bring him up to speed at second base, where he’s played 12 games so far this year.

“He’s adjusting well to the position. He’s an athlete. He can play all over the field,” Slivka said. “It’s just a matter of time given his work ethic. … We’ve given him a steady string of starts here at second base just to make sure he’s more than capable at that position.”

The Diamondbacks optioned slumping outfielder Jake McCarthy on Monday, and Lawlar will not be taking his spot on the roster.

The bottom half of Arizona’s lineup has really struggled this year. Hitters in the 5-9 spots have a .197 average with an OPS of .631. Third baseman Eugenio Suarez has clubbed six home runs and driven in 15 through 22 games, but is hitting .156. He took a day off on Sunday, when swift defender but lackluster hitter Garrett Hampson received the start.

The Diamondbacks have their development plan for Lawlar and have been clear. They didn’t want him to come up and ride the bench and when he’s up next, ideally he won’t have to go back down again.

“He’s a really good player and he’s going to be on our team at some point,” general manager Mike Hazen told Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke on Wednesday.

If Lawlar stays hot like this and shows he can handle himself at second base — and if the D-backs continue to lack lineup depth — it’s hard to imagine making the call wouldn’t get more and more tempting.

When asked if Lawlar is close to being ready for the major leagues, Slivka left it at “I think he’s trending in the right direction.”

    Around the Diamondbacks’ farm system

    – The Diamondbacks activated utility infielder Blaze Alexander from the injured list (oblique strain) and optioned him to Triple-A over the weekend. For Alexander, consistency and versatility are going to be key, and his defensive positioning highlights that. Alexander is still getting reps along the infield, but he’s also playing center field.

    – Adrian Del Castillo, who competed for the backup catcher spot after making his MLB debut last year, has yet to play this season due to a right shoulder strain. Slivka said he will remain out for another month or so, but it is “fluid.”

    – Left-handed pitching prospect Yu-Min Lin is getting close to joining an affiliate, likely Triple-A Reno. Lin is still in spring training mode, Slivka said, after he joined the club late after a busy offseason. Lin pitched for Taiwan in the WBSC Premier 12 international tournament over the offseason and had to fulfill a military obligation.

Slivka said Lin is up to four innings and will throw again this week.

“The command and the consistency of his throw, it’s been really good to see,” Slivka said. “We’re going to read and react. It’s getting close, though.”

    – When asked if there is an under-the-radar prospect who’s turned heads so far, he pointed out right-handed pitcher Mason Marriott. The 2024 sixth-round pick out of Baylor has struck out 19 batters in 13.2 innings with High-A Hillsboro so far this season.
