Just about every boys volleyball league championship in the Daily News area has been decided with regular-season play concluding Wednesday. With higher seeding on the line in both CIF Southern and L.A. City sections, teams will be battling in the final few matches of the season.
Burroughs clinches first Pacific League title in three years
Burroughs returned to the top of the Pacific League last week after another perfect week of league play.
The Bears swept Glendale on April 15 before taking down Burbank in straight sets on Thursday, April 17, to clinch the outright league title. It’s their first league title since 2022.
Noah Duffield led the team with 16 kills and two aces against Burbank while Ryder Tafoya had 12 kills against Glendale. Tafoya added three blocks and a pair of aces against Burbank.
The Bears have dropped just one set in Pacific League play and will look to continue the streak as they finish out league and regular-season play on Tuesday at Arcadia.
According to the latest CIF-SS rankings, both teams are looking like a lock for the Division 2 playoffs and could meet a third time this season in the CIF Southern Section postseason.
Thousand Oaks and Westlake co-champs in Marmonte
Westlake and Thousand Oaks returned to the summit this past week as co-champs in the Marmonte League.
The Warriors beat Oaks Christian, 3-1, to secure the feat while Thousand Oaks defeated two-time reigning champion Newbury Park in straight sets to clinch the championship.
“It’s our goal every year, but it doesn’t always happen,” Thousand Oaks coach Seth Burnham said in a phone interview. “Obviously, we always have tough competition. There’s never been a year in league where one team just completely rolls over everybody.”
Burnham said this year’s seniors showed championship potential as freshmen.
“We had a group of guys where I saw a lot of potential and talent in one class,” he said. “Then you work with them, get them playing beach, and get them playing club. As the time progresses, you see where the improvements come in, and so we thought we had a shot this year, but we knew it was going to be tough.”
The Lancers (22-14, 8-2) were led in their victory over Newbury Park by a pair of efficient hitters in Bryson Saint with 10 kills and Thomas Salee with nine kills. Both hit over .430 on the night. Thousand Oaks got its normal boost from setter Cooper Barrus, who added 34 assists, nine digs and four aces.
Barrus has been a force all season. He earned a spot in the school record book as the single-season record holder with his 330 points served and 61 aces, with potentially a long postseason still ahead of him.
Also going into the Thousand Oaks record book is libero Zachary Kochel, the 2024 Marmonte League libero of the year. Kochel set a school record with 465 perfect passes this season.
“(Kochel’s) had a great season for us,” Burnham said. “He was libero of the year for us last year, and I can’t see him not getting it this year. He’s done some amazing stuff for us this year and he hasn’t missed a set.”
Thousand Oaks picked up a chunk of wins at the Crescenta Valley tournament over the weekend and will have one last nonleague match to sharpen its tools before postseason play.
“I think we’re feeling pretty confident,” Burnham said. “It’s also tough looking at playoffs, knowing things are so different now. Usually, you would be going in knowing these teams we’re gonna face, but it looks like we’re probably going to be in Division 3. Checking out the teams that are kind of close by, we feel pretty confident about what we can do.”
The Lancers conclude regular season play Wednesday at home against Oxnard.
Foothill League spots dwindling
West Ranch and Canyon are a lock for the CIF-SS postseason having finished first and second, respectively, in the Foothill League.
The Santa Clarita teams each locked up their spots this past week as the Wildcats notched the Foothill League title while the Cowboys beat Valencia and Golden Valley
Cowboys setter/opposite hitter James Audette led the way against the Grizzlies with 29 kills, while Brayden Alfar added 15 digs. Hayden Jones powered Canyon (27-8, 8-2) on Thursday against the Vikings with 14 kills and Jayden Hayes finished with 13 kills.

The Wildcats then finished fifth at the Redondo Beach tournament with wins over South, Roosevelt, Valencia and a pair of victories over Palo Verde. Senior Parker Rappaport was named all-tournament.
Valencia, Saugus and Golden Valley are in the trenches fighting for the league’s final two automatic spots in the playoffs.
The Grizzlies (11-10, 5-5) had a five-set win over Saugus (14-14, 5-6) on Thursday that kept the Grizzlies’ playoff hopes alive. Golden Valley nearly shook up the standings earlier in the week but lost in five sets against Canyon. Three of the sets went to deuce.
Golden Valley winning out could potentially set up a coin flip to settle a tiebreaker between the Grizzlies, Vikings and Centurions to settle the final playoff spot, but Valencia (20-10, 6-5) can clinch a spot for itself and Saugus by beating Golden Valley on Tuesday.
Chatsworth finishes fourth in Hawaii tournament
Chatsworth finished fourth this past week in the Punahou Clash of Titans Tournament in Hawaii.
Chatsworth was dropped in four sets in the third-place match by Moanalua, 28-26, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23. Middle blocker Taj Unuakhalu led with 15 kills and four blocks. Junior Grant Chang added 12 kills and four digs while sophomore Kevin Rabaja totaled a career-high 18 digs.
The Chancellors (30-9, 8-0) are back in action locally this week.
Chatsworth has already clinched its fifth straight West Valley League title, but the team will look to finish the regular season strong with hopes of a CIF L.A. City Division 1 run at a three-peat.
