SNL Cast Member Weighs In On Recent White Lotus Sketch Controversy

Saturday Night Live has never shied away from brutally mocking well-known figures in both politics and pop culture, whether looking at someone as universally recognizable as Donald Trump or a celebrated actor in a world-renowned HBO series.

In a show known for its famously biting sense of humor, though, some of the figures SNL mocks tend to clap back with their own equally inflammatory responses, as happens to be the case with the show's recent 'White Potus' sketch.

Merging contemporary politics with trending pop culture stories, 'White Potus' sees SNL parody HBO's critically acclaimed dark comedy series, The White Lotus. Infusing numerous political figures like Donald Trump and his various family members into the framework of The White Lotus Season 3, the sketch also includes a fairly mean-spirited portrayal of actress Aimee Lou Wood.

Played by SNL cast member Sarah Sherman, the sketch's caricatured version of Wood specifically appears with an exaggerated British accent and protruding front teeth -- a prominent facial feature of Wood's that caught fans' attention shortly after The White Lotus' Season 3 premiere.

In response to the skit, Wood lashed out against SNL on her Instagram Story, calling the sketch's humor "cheap" and "unfunny."

"I did find the SNL thing mean and unfunny," the 31-year-old actress admitted. "Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple weeks ago."

As controversy around the sketch continues to mount, Saturday Night Live mainstay Bowen Yang chimed in on Wood's criticisms, calling them "completely valid."

In a recent interview with Extra, Yang specifically said, "With parody, you kind of forget the sort of human, emotional cost that it sort of extols on someone."

"We as comedians can take account for that instead of banging our foot and saying that we should be allowed to say whatever we want," Yang went on to say. "It seems like she has spoken to people at the show about it and ... hopefully it's there's room to sort of move on from it."
