Denzel Aberdeen is staying in the SEC to continue his college basketball career.
After 3 seasons at Florida, Aberdeen entered the transfer portal. On Monday, he announced his commitment to Kentucky in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Aberdeen’s decision to transfer surprised the college basketball world, coming as a particular shock to the Florida fanbase. A product of Orlando (Florida) Dr. Phillips High School, Aberdeen was a multi-year contributor for Todd Golden and the Gators, playing a key role in UF’s national championship run.
Over 3 seasons, Aberdeen made 84 appearances for Florida. Primarily a bench contributor, the 6-5, 190-pound guard received his first starts in 2024-25.
In 2024-25, Aberdeen averaged 19.7 minutes per game, up from 9.8 in 2023-24 and 3.3 in 2022-23. He also made 5 starts, filling in during SEC play when Walter Clayton Jr. and Alijah Martin dealt with injuries.
In starts against Mississippi State and South Carolina, Aberdeen scored 20 and 22 points. He finished the season averaging 7.7 points per game, scoring 12 in the Sweet 16 win over Maryland and 7 in the national championship game against Houston.
Aberdeen was in line for a starting spot at Florida in 2025-26 as the Gators try to repeat as national champions. Aberdeen’s decision to leave the program was reportedly tied to his NIL asking price for 2025-26.
Aberdeen remains in the SEC after leaving his projected starting spot at Florida. Was told his decision to leave UF came w/ an asking price of $2 million for next season. Regardless of whether or not UK matched that request, the Cats aren't hurting for cash in this year's cycle. t.co/zRV79GEhr7
