Outrage has erupted online after a video surfaced showing the fatal injection of a husky in Tanta. This has led many citizens in Gharbia and across Egypt to demand the dismissal of Dr. Hamdi Haggag, the director of the Veterinary Medicine Authority in Tanta, and the opening of an urgent investigation into the circumstances of the event, which some have described as the “field execution of an innocent creature.”
The veterinary campaign had gone to the village of Mahalla Marhoum following complaints from residents that three children had been bitten by the dog, resulting in varying degrees of injuries. The children were taken to the hospital for treatment. Subsequently, the dog was caught after residents attempted to beat it and tied it to lampposts before the veterinary procedure of injecting the dog with a substance that caused its death was carried out.
Despite explanations from the authority’s director, who asserted that the injection was a “painkiller” at the request of the residents due to the dog’s deteriorating condition, the wave of anger that swept social media platforms has not subsided.
Many activists commented on the video, stating that the dog was in a condition that did not warrant subjecting it to further harm, and called for an investigation into the incident.
While the Veterinary Medicine Authority defended the actions of the treatment team, insisting that the dog was given a pain-relieving injection to alleviate its suffering, rights organizations criticized the way the dog was handled, considering it a violation of human and ethical values in dealing with animals.
They demanded an independent investigation to determine the true nature of the substance injected into the dog and to verify that the procedures taken were legal.
