Pedro Pascal Reacts to Shocking Last of Us Episode

Following a somewhat slower start to The Last of Us's second season, HBO's monumental survival drama kicked it into high gear with its most recent episode.

Taking a page from its video game counterpart, Seasons 2's "Through the Valley" sees the long-awaited death of series mainstay Joel Miller -- the lovably gruff survivor played by Pedro Pascal.

The scene in question acts as a faithful recreation of Joel's death in The Last of Us Part II. In it, Kaitlyn Dever's vengeful Firefly Abby finally catches up to Joel after years of fruitlessly searching for the veteran smuggler. In a fit of rage, Abby proceeds to furiously beat Joel into a bloody pulp, before murdering him in front of his surrogate daughter, Ellie.

It's a traumatizing scene to watch, and one that left viewers at home virtually speechless. As audiences' reactions continue to circulate across social media, Pedro Pascal himself weighed in on his character's fate, telling Entertainment Weekly, "I'm in active denial" about the episode's disquieting ending.

In an interview with the entertainment publication, Pascal went on to say he knew his character's journey was destined to come to an end with Season 2. However, he felt the experience made for a bittersweet conclusion to his tenure on the series, citing it as one of the highlights of his professional career as an actor.

"I was always sidestepping how I really felt, that in a big way my experience was coming to an end on the show," Pascal said. "I guess that was the strangest thing to step through because I felt so bonded to everyone in the show after going through the gauntlet of season 1 together, not just with Bella [Ramsey], but with the entire cast and crew. So to have this goodbye was very sad for me, and I had such a physical manifestation, a violent mirror of how sad it was for Joel to die. To be honest, it was quite dreamlike."

With the recent news that The Last of Us has been renewed for a third season, Pascal also said that it was hard to accept that his time on the series has officially drawn to a close.

"I realize this more and more as I get older, I find myself slipping into denial that anything is over," the 50-year-old actor explained to Entertainment Weekly. "I know that I'm forever bonded to so many members of the experiences and just have to see them under different circumstances, but never will under the circumstances Joel on The Last of Us. And, no, I don't spend a lot of time thinking about it because it makes me sad."
