EFL director of Tyson Fury’s hometown club reveals whether relegation KO’s takeover bid

Morecambe director James Wakefield has shared the club’s possible next steps as their 18-year stay in the EFL looks set to come to an end.

The Shrimps are staring down the barrel of relegation to the National League ahead of their Easter Monday clash against Salford City.

Fury has previously sponsored Morecambe but will not be their ownerMorecambe FC

The cash-strapped Lancashire side lost 1-0 to the Class of ’92-owned outfit in December, with another defeat ending their survival bid.

Morecambe’s EFL status was left hanging by a thread after a 1-0 defeat to Bromley on Good Friday kept them bottom of League Two.

Tyson Fury‘s hometown club are eight points adrift at the foot of the table with three games remaining.

Only a victory over Salford will give Morecambe a hope of preserving its League Two status, but even that might not be enough should 22nd-placed Tranmere also win away at Barrow.

Their miserable season on the pitch has coincided with continued struggles off it as the Shrimps remain up for sale.

Morecambe were put on the market by Bond Group Investments in September 2022, while the club were still a League One team.

Its process will reach the 1,000-day mark by the end of next month – by which time Derek Adams’ men could no longer be an EFL side.

Morecambe director Wakefield told the latest Shrimps Trust podcast: “We have got plans for every eventuality, but it does all hinge on a change of ownership because, without a change of ownership, we are in Groundhog Day.

“I would love us to be in League Two and have a run at getting in League One again, but under different ownership.

“As a fan or a director, this club’s great, this club’s fun, this club’s enjoyable and is something everyone can get excited about again on a Saturday, whether it’s playing Eastleigh or Ipswich.

“I don’t think a change of league is necessarily the end, but a continuation under the same ownership is worse.

“I would rather be in the National League with a new owner than be in the Championship with this interminable Groundhog Day nonsense going on.”

Morecambe owner Jason Whittingham claimed to have agreed a deal with London businessman Kuljeet Singh Momi last summer.

Nearly a year later, Singh Momi, who negotiated the takeover through his corporate vehicle Panjab Warriors Sports Limited, is yet to have his bid ratified by the EFL.

However, Wakefield gave fans cause for optimism that development could finally be made on that front.

He added: “We do seem to be closer to having the takeover confirmed than we have been for a long time – which is gutting to be saying it now and not a year ago, when we could have been coming into this season in League Two, with a budget that didn’t mean we started the year with one player.”

Speaking in January, Morecambe owner Whittingham maintained that he would sell ‘at a reasonable price’ if Singh Momi’s proposed takeover fell through.

Former boxing heavyweight champion Fury has long been touted as a potential new owner as the area’s most famous resident but interest has fallen flat in recent times.

The Tyson Fury Foundation is housed in the north-east corner of the Mazuma Mobile Stadium, which also contains a gym within the building that is owned by the Gypsy King.

The 36-year-old has sponsored the club’s shorts in the past, and even told talkSPORT in 2022 that he was considering becoming the owner.

Fury told talkSPORT: “I’m thinking about buying Morecambe Football Club, they’re in League One at the moment.

“So I was thinking I invest X amount of millions in them. Basically throw it at them and keep them going up.

“I’ve been offered to buy Morecambe Football Club. I own all the training facilities anyway and the training gym. So who knows?

“You might be looking at a football club owner.”
