John Cena has finally done it.
In the main event of WrestleMania 41 on Sunday night, he dethroned Cody Rhodes to win the Undisputed WWE championship.
As he lifted the title belt high above his head, Cena made history, becoming the company’s first-ever 17-time world champion.
Before Sunday night, the iconic superstar was tied for the record with Ric Flair, but by securing a three-count against Rhodes, he re-wrote the history books.
And he did it as a bad guy.
Despite being the face of the company for two decades, Cena made a shocking heel turn just weeks ahead of WrestleMania.
After winning the Elimination Chamber match in March, he stunned fans by brutally attacking Rhodes, aligning himself with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in the process
The pair then came face-to-face on the Road to WrestleMania as they built towards the main-event match.
During appearances on Raw and SmackDown, Cena roasted his opponent and the WWE Univerise on the mic, but didn’t get physical until Sunday night’s match.
To close the show in Las Vegas, the pair went back and forth in an epic clash, which concluded with Cena showing off his new heel tactics.
In front of an electric Las Vegas crowd, the two stars exchanged blow after blow, for near-fall after near-fall.
An ‘Attitude Adjustment’ finisher from Cena, followed by an ‘Avalanche AA’ from the top rope, failed to put Rhodes away.
Cena beat Rhodes in an electric main event on Sunday nightWWE Cena secured the pin after interference from Travis ScottWWEThe defending champ then came close to picking up the pinfall win, catching Cena with a flying cutter, which the recently-turned heel kicked out of.
Both men hit their best shots, but neither could do enough to secure the win.
Rhodes even had Cena down for a 10 count, but with the referee ‘inadvertently’ knocked down, it didn’t matter.
Travis Scott then made his entrance, making no secret of his effort to cost Rhodes the match, before stepping inside the squared circle.
Unsurprisingly, he finally got his Elimination Chamber receipt, taking a ‘Cross Rhodes’ finisher.
Off the distraction, Cena wrapped up the win, hitting Rhodes with a low blow before smashing him around the head with the title belt to win.

And with that, he walked out of WrestleMania 41 a 17-time champion on a night that The Rock didn’t show up.
Long before turning heel and securing his record-breaking win, Cena had announced 2025 would serve as a retirement tour, as he prepares to step away from the squared circle.
Over the past two decades, he has carried the torch for WWE, becoming one of the most iconic wrestlers in history.
In more recent years, Cena transitioned away from full-time competition and built a successful career in Hollywood, while pursuing other projects around the world.
And while he split opinion as a face whenever returning home, it seemed impossible that WWE would turn him heel in his final months.
But that’s exactly what happened at Elimination Chamber, and the brave decision has undoubtedly paid off.
There was no question that a Heel Cena would main-event his last WrestleMania, and his feud with Rhodes has arguably transcended the professional wrestling industry, becoming a major talking point worldwide.
By dethroning ‘The American Nightmare’ on the Grandest Stage of All, Cena will now write a new chapter in WWE history as the first-ever 17-time world champion.
