The Tar Heels were the No. 2 seed in the field and had defeated No. 7 Stanford 4-1 and No. 3 NC State 4-0 to reach Sunday’s final. The No. 4 seed Cavaliers had upset No. 1 Duke to book their spot in the championship match.

UNC began on the front foot with a commanding performance in doubles, as the pair of Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton won 6-1 on No. 1 court and Tatum Evans and Theadora Rabman won 6-3 on No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for the Tar Heels.

In singles, Carson Taguilig and Claire Hill won comfortably on No. 5 and No. 6, putting the Tar Heels a point from victory. Brantmeier put the finishing touches on the dominant afternoon, beating Virginia’s Sara Ziodato 6-2, 6-1 to complete the 4-0 sweep. It was UNC’s first win against Virginia this season, as the Cavaliers had accounted for two of Carolina’s four losses this season.

The tournament title gives UNC an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels enter the field 23-4 overall and 11-1 in league play, having won eight matches in a row. The tournament will begin Friday, May 2.
