A NEW traffic sign is causing confusion for drivers and officials have been forced to clarify what it means.
The sign installed at a busy intersection was meant to be a reminder of local road rules but it just left drivers scratching their heads.
There used to be a stagnant “no U-turn” sign at the intersection but a new electronic sign was recently installed instead.
The new display now only shows the no U-turn graphic at peak traffic hours.
Residents were left confused by the change as they didn’t understand why the U-turn sign appeared to be just all black.
One local, Jeffery Park, thought a piece of black paper was covering the sign.
“I’m just curious why they covered up the no U-turn sign at Veterans and Steamboat,” he told local CBS affiliate KTVN.
He pointed to the fact that there’s been “numerous accidents” at that intersection.
“After they put up the no U-turn, we haven’t had any accidents, but now they’ve covered it with black paper,” Park added.
Officials in the city of Reno, Nevada, explained to the outlet that there was no black paper covering the sign.
When U-turns are allowed, the sign is turned off, which is what makes it appear black.
The sign will show a white U-turn arrow with a red line through it during peak traffic hours to signal that U-turns are not allowed.
“The reason why U-turns were previously prohibited 24/7 is because this movement was in conflict with the eastbound right green arrow [on the traffic light],” news anchor Ryan Canaday explained after talking with city officials.
“The city says now it only operates the eastbound right green arrow during peak traffic periods.
“When this right green arrow is not in operation, U-turns are permitted because the conflict there no longer exists.”
For now, the peak traffic hours are 3:30 pm to 6 pm Monday through Friday.
On the weekends, the peak hours are 5 pm to 7 pm on Saturdays and 4 pm to 6 pm on Sundays.
New driving laws in 2025
Drivers across the United States are having to adjust to a slew of new road rules that take effect in 2025. Some of those include:
Daylighting law prohibiting drivers from parking their cars within 20 feet of any crosswalk in California Stricter street racing penalties in California Changes to car seat age and weight requirements in Colorado Fines for failing to follow designated enter and exit areas for express lanes in Colorado Bans on handheld devices while driving in Colorado and Missouri Drivers allowed to have a digital copy of their license on their cell phones in Illinois Yield right of way to emergency vehicles in Illinois Drivers required to take a vision test to renew licenses in Kentucky School bus safety law in Oregon Vehicle safety inspections scrapped in TexasCity officials tried to simplify the rules even further.
They shared a statement on social media alongside an informative photo.
“When the sign is off, U-Turns are allowed,” they wrote.
“When the sign is on, U-Turns are NOT allowed.
“Hope that helps!”
Officials ended their statement by saying: “Drivers are advised to follow the sign as it appears.”
One local said in response, “It also looks like there’s a red light when U-turns are not allowed? Lol.”
And a second suggested, “To minimize driver confusion, the sign should emulate a standard “No U-Turn” sign in the @MUTCD.
