World Snooker champion Kyren Wilson suffers shock first round KO – days after mocking Crucible curse

Kyren Wilson has become the latest victim of the infamous Crucicle curse after being knocked out in the opening round of the World Snooker Championship.

The 33-year-old has fallen at the first hurdle in looking to become the first player to defend his world crown since the event was moved to Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre in 1977.

Wilson lost 10-9 against Chinese debutant Lei Peifan on Saturday night – becoming the 20th player to succumb to the curse.

‘The Warrior’ is now the 20th first-time winner who has failed to retain their title.

And the Kettering native may now be hoping that mocking the curse earlier in the week by smashing a mirror will not bring seven years of bad luck.

In a light-hearted video posted on X by his management team, Wilson was seen acknowledging the curse by playing up to a number of bad omens.

He first put a snooker rest through a mirror, before he crossed paths with a black cat.

If that wasn’t enough to tempt fate, he then proceeded to open up an umbrella inside.

Captioning the clip, ‘Curses are made to be broken….,’ Wilson may have been better off not looking to anger the snooker gods.

Discussing the curse in the build-up to his opener, Wilson said: “I am close to getting sick of the Crucible curse, I am getting there!

“But no it’s part and parcel, it’s great for the media team, it creates another story and it’s great for the fans.”

Despite his obvious heartache at being dumped out early on, Wilson was quick to congratulate his 21-year-old opponent who sealed victory in the final-leg decider with a break of 66.

He told BBC Sport: “It is really hard to take. I gave it my all and Lei came out extremely positive this evening and potted some incredible balls

“It really hurts to be honest. As a debutant he held himself together incredibly well and I’d like to wish him all the best for the rest of the tournament.

“He seems like quite a cool character. He showed no emotion at all.”

Reflecting on the curse, he then added: “It’s obviously been built up into something it’s not, because other players have gone on to win it.

“I’m sure it’ll be broken at some point but unfortunately I won’t be that person.”

As for Lei, he showed his class in praising his fallen foe, as he stated: “He [Wilson] is a legend, I am so proud I could beat him,” Lei said.

“I didn’t think too much because it was my first time at the Crucible so I just wanted to enjoy it.

“I was nervous in the decider, but I just told myself, ‘try and calm down.”

Lei will now face the winner between Jak Jones and Zhao Xintong in the second round next Friday.
