After five consecutive losses, Chennai Super Kings are back to winning ways. With MS Dhoni once again leading the side, they are hoping for a miracle, winning at least six out of seven matches to qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs. They travel to Mumbai for the reverse fixture against Mumbai Indians, having already won the first leg. But this CSK is different. Despite their win against Lucknow Super Giants in the last match, CSK are struggling. However, after finding a win, Dhoni is unlikely to tinker with the combination. That means, there will be no place for Devon Conway, R Ashwin or Dewald Brevis in CSK Playing XI vs MI.
The struggling CSK side made two big changes in their last game. They dropped Conway and Ashwin, bringing in Shaik Rasheed and Ayush Matre. Both worked well. They have reinforced the squad with Brevis as a replacement for injured Gurjapneet Singh. But the South African youngster linked up with the CSK squad just on Friday. With hardly any practice with the squad, he is unlikely to feature in the MI vs CSK clash.
What about Devon Conway?
The New Zealander was a trusted batter at the top order after Faf du Plessis departed. But Conway has been struggling with the bat of late and stretched his poor run of form to the IPL as well. In three innings, Conway scored 13, 69 off 49 and 12.
His struggles were so severe that he was retired out against Punjab Kings with the chase still on. In his place, CSK brought in Shaik Rasheed. The youngster gave CSK a good start, scoring 19-ball 27. That will give him confidence to face Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar at the Wankhede. For Conway, unless there is an injury crisis, the IPL is over.

— Chennai Super Kings (@ChennaiIPL) April 20, 2025Will CSK play Dewald Brevis?
There is always excitement around Dewald Brevis or Baby AB. During his stint at Mumbai Indians, he played some good knocks. But more importantly, he is coming back from a good run of form in first-class cricket. Although it is surprising that Brevis had to come into the IPL 2025 as an injury replacement, his debut in yellow must wait.
Rachin Ravindra and Matheesha Pathirana are two regular starters for CSK, occupying two overseas quotas. Noor Ahmad has been CSK’s lead spinner in IPL 2025. Hence, he is irreplaceable, leaving just one spot. CSK have used the spot for Jamie Overton and Sam Curran as additional seamers. Unless there is a batting collapse, CSK are unlikely to change that combination.
What about R Ashwin?
His Rs 9.75 crore return was celebrated. But Ashwin has fallen flat. Barring some magic moments so far, Ashwin has bagged five wickets in six matches, going at 9.90 economy rate. Except for two matches, he has conceded at over 10 per over. He has even been rendered ineffective at his home ground MA Chidambaram Stadium. Hence, he will need to wait unless the conditions demand his inlcusion again.

CSK head coach Stephen Fleming has hinted at using the bench. With youngsters such as Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Andre Siddharth on the bench, they could get a look-in, but not in the MI vs CSK clash.
“Unfortunately, the position we find ourselves in, we have run out of time to be too patient on the other hand. We’ve got eyes on the season. But we’ve also got a little bit of a look forward, making sure that we are developing players for the future. That might be the second half of the season, if it doesn’t go well over the next couple of games,” Fleming said of CSK’s situation ahead of the match.
