San Diego FC ready for comforts of home after third straight road loss, 3-0

San Diego FC was down early Saturday – and stayed down.

Liel Abada scored early on Pep Biel’s league-leading sixth assist and Charlotte FC rolled to a 3-0 victory over SDFC. San Diego won its first two road matches but has since dropped two straight and three in a row away from home.

Kristijan Kahlina, the reigning goalkeeper of the year, finished with two saves on the way to his fourth clean sheet this season for Charlotte (6-2-1), the last remaining club with a perfect home record. It was also the fifth straight victory for the club, which is tied for the Eastern Conference lead.

Charlotte jumped in front in the 11th minute when Abada used Biel’s assist to score for the second time. It was Abada’s ninth career goal in 32 appearances with Charlotte.

Charlotte is 6-0-1 when Biel contributes to a goal this season.

SDFC (4-3-2) was forced to play a man down from the 43rd minute on after defender Andrés Reyes picked up two yellow cards. The second yellow resulted in a penalty-kick goal by Patrick Agyemang for a 2-0 lead at the half.

Ashley Westwood set up Andrew Privett’s first career goal — in his 50th appearance — for a 3-0 lead in the 57th minute. The assist was Westwood’s first this season.

Coach Mikey Varas called the club’s two-game losing streak “a short-term hiccup.”

“It definitely wasn’t a good performance,” he said. “The boys know that, I know that.”

CJ dos Santos totaled seven saves for San Diego. Dos Santos had two saves and Kahlina one in the first half.

Reyes made his debut for SDFC, his 97th career MLS regular season appearance, after rehabbing from an injury sustained during the preseason. He also became the first player in SDFC history to be ejected from a match.

Dos Santos and defender Chris McVey have started and played a full 90 minutes through the club’s first nine matches, each totaling 810 minutes played.

SDFC returns to Snapdragon Stadium to play Real Salt Lake at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

“The last two games is not the version we want to show to people, especially our fans, which means we will not show that at home, I can guarantee that,” midfielder Jeppe Tverskov said.
