The Euphrates River in Deir Ezzor city has begun to witness drowning incidents as temperatures rise and families head to swim in it, amidst fears of the continuation of these incidents and recommendations for caution.
In recent years, drowning incidents in the Euphrates have not ceased. With rising temperatures and increased swimming activity, the river has turned into a source of danger threatening the lives of many, especially children and youth.
Since the beginning of April, the Syria Civil Defence teams have recorded two drowning incidents in the Euphrates River in Deir Ezzor province, according to a statement from the Civil Defence to Enab Baladi.
On April 4, a 15-year-old child drowned in the river while trying to swim near a park, according to Mohammed al-Najras, a resident of Deir Ezzor.
Al-Najras and other residents who spoke to Enab Baladi called on relevant authorities to provide designated swimming areas and to prevent access to the river, especially during midday when temperatures peak.
A correspondent from Enab Baladi stated that most families resort to the Euphrates River during these times, escaping the high heat.
Yasser Naneh, a rescue and search team official in the Syria Civil Defence, stated that the teams, in cooperation with the Deir Ezzor Fire Brigade, retrieved two bodies during April.
He added to Enab Baladi that swimming in the Euphrates River is dangerous due to the presence of water currents and vegetation, also including experienced swimmers, as most rivers and water bodies in Syria are hazardous.
Naneh confirmed the danger of attempting to rescue anyone without specialized equipment and teams of trained individuals, as attempts to save someone can turn into a tragedy, a scenario that has occurred in several areas.
He emphasized that the Civil Defence teams urge families to pay attention to swimming areas “so that a moment of joy does not turn into a moment of sorrow.”
The Euphrates River is a water source and a tourist destination in Deir Ezzor province, but it also carries risks due to its strong currents and varying depths.
Drowning incidents in the Euphrates River and its irrigation channels occur every year from the onset to the end of the summer season in areas traversed by the river in Deir Ezzor province.
Despite the repeated discussions about drowning cases in the Euphrates River, residents of the towns and villages stretching along both sides of the river see themselves linked to swimming activities in the river every summer, as stated by young men from Raqqa in a previous interview with Enab Baladi.
Young men from Raqqa believe that the frequent drowning incidents in the province are due to the Autonomous Administration dumping debris along the riverbank, making areas frequented by youth for swimming deeper.
At the same time, some youth criticize the lack of rescue efforts and responses to drowning incidents along the banks of the Euphrates River.
