Based on the best-selling novel, Playdate by Alex Dahl, the series follows one woman's nightmare when her child is abducted by someone she believed to be a fellow parent at her child's school.

A seemingly ordinary decision turns the world of Elisa (Denise Gough), mum to two young kids, upside-down in this tense thriller. When her 9-year-old daughter Lucia (Beatrice Cohen) excitedly asks to go on an overnight playdate with her new best friend Josie (Robyn Betteridge), Elisa agrees. After meeting Josie’s mother, Rebecca (Holliday Grainger), she’s put at ease by her charming nature and their impressive house. But when she says goodnight to her daughter, she has no idea that she is about to be thrust into every parent’s worst nightmare.
The next day, when Elisa goes to pick up Lucia, she discovers that the beautiful house was a holiday rental. Lucia is missing. Rebecca and Josie have vanished. What started out as her daughter’s first sleepover has turned into an abduction.
As an urgent manhunt unfolds across Europe, Elisa and her husband Fred (Jim Sturgess) find themselves the object of police and public scrutiny. Elisa’s perfect family begins to unravel under the pressure, and long-buried secrets come to light. Rebecca took Lucia for a reason. And as viewers learn more about the tangled lives of these women, the question of whether Rebecca was justified in kidnapping the little girl arises – and if she might be better off staying hidden.

Is The Stolen Girl based on other material?
Yes, it is based on the 2020 novel, Playdate, by Alex Dahl. It is not to be confused with the novel, The Stolen Girl, by Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch which is also about a kidnapped girl, but in Skrypuch's book, the story takes place post-WWII when a Ukranian girl is kidnapped as a child and raised by a Nazi family.
From what we could tell, the series stays pretty close to the events in the book, including most of the character names. While the book had several twists in it including a twist ending, we can not confirm or deny that final episodes mirror the events in the book.
When does The Stolen Girl premiere?
The Stolen Girl premiered at 10 p.m. ET on Wednesday, April 16 on Freeform and will be available to stream the next day on Hulu. Episodes drop weekly on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET.

Episode 1Elisa is late picking up her daughter Lucia from school when Rebecca, the mother of Lucia’s new friend, suggests a sleepover for the girls. When she goes to pick Lucia up the next morning, she discovers Lucia is missing.
Episode 2Elisa and Fred are in limbo as the police speculate that an organized criminal gang might be involved. Meanwhile, a mysterious prisoner, Marcus Turner, collects news clippings about Lucia’s disappearance, and Fred’s behavior is suspicious.
Episode 3A flashback shows Rebecca preparing to abduct Lucia in Southern France, and in the present day, she reveals shocking news to Lucia. Meanwhile, Selma continues to investigate Elisa and discovers her dark past.

Grainger has been acting since she was 5 after being scouted for a BBC series. Many recognize her from her roles in The Borgias, Merlin, The Capture, and Strike. She has twins with her partner, actor Harry Treadaway (Star Trek: Picard, Penny Dreadful), who is a twin himself!
