Texas lands commitment from top transfer kicker

Texas has a new kicker for the 2025 season.

The Longhorns picked up a commitment from former Texas State kicker Mason Shipley on Friday evening, according to a report from 247Sports. Shipley was one of the most highly-recruited kickers in the portal as he’s made 31 of 35 career field goals during his time in college.

Of Shipley’s 31 made field goals in his career, 3 of them have been from beyond 50 yards. He’s 3-of-4 from outside of 50 and has also made 89% of his career field goal attempts from between 40 and 49 yards. His consistency and power has made him one of the better kickers at the Group-of-5 level over the past couple of seasons.

Shipley’s commitment comes one day after Texas’s all-time leader in made field goals, Bert Auburn, decided to enter the transfer portal. Auburn struggled down the stretch of the 2024 campaign for the Longhorns and was competing along with Will Stone for the starting job this spring.

Now it appears the competition will be between Shipley and Stone for the 2025 season. Stone has been at Texas for 3 years, but has significantly less game experience. He’s never attempted a field goal for the Longhorns and is just 2-for-2 on extra point attempts.

Shipley is UT’s third transfer commitment of the day. The Longhorns previously added a new tight end to replace Gunnar Helm and some defensive line depth as well.
